My System Specs

Default Very small basic and cheap printer

^^ thats all I want, I'm looking 2nd hand locally. Any recommendations. I'm thinking just an inkjet printer, no scanners or fax with it, b/w is fine, and the smaller the better.

I'm looking at a HP Deskjet 1000 so far for $20, sounds about right.

The problem with buying a used inkjet printer is that the ink carts will cost as much to replace as the printer cost new.

If you can afford spending an extra $20 you might be able to find a single sided samsung laser printer new. That'd give you 1K + pages printed out on the included toner.

I'm not seeing any currently on sale, but I've seen the single sided ones on at costco for around $40.

two years a go I bought a cheapo samsung laser printer ( I think it was on sale for 65 CAD) and it works great I still haven't replaced the ink yet but when the time comes I will most likely just buy another printer because apparently the ink will almost cost the same price

$70 gets you a laser printer with decent value toner cartidges
BrotherŪ Refurbished EHL-2240 Mono Laser Printer | StaplesŪ

$90 gets you a laser printer that will duplex print, wireless, and decent value toner cartidges
BrotherŪ Refurbished EHL-2270DW Mono Laser Printer | StaplesŪ

inkjet printers are a bunch of crap unless you need color for some reason. Inkjet toner costs will kill you over the long haul.

+1 for the Brother 2270. If you can, try to find the older version, the 2170W. It'll probably be cheaper and will more than serve your needs.

well I really don't need to use it often at all, and I don't want to support the printer racket either (a major source of overpriced cheap crap designed to fail or shut down for good after so many pages are printed.) , so I'm getting a 2nd hand one for under $40 for sure. The HP was only used for 2 weeks so it should have lots of ink left.

the reviews seem good for it, cheap and small and prints good enough for average things.

You are aware ink dries out over time, depending on the ink cartridge and printer.

Also that printer mentioned is a piece of crap. We've gone through 2 of them at home.

You might try something like this. ;P
Newegg.ca - OKIDATA MICROLINE 186 240 x 216 dpi 9 pins Dot Matrix Printer

But yea, stay away from inkjet.

What is an average MTBF on various printers these days anyway?

I got a samsung monochrome wifi laser printer from memoryexpress for $40. And around xmas they were selling a wired samsung laser for $20.

Look around for sales, don't buy a friggen ink printer they BLOW!

If you don't print much the cheap laser will last you many many years on the stock toner. Hell I print like 40 pages a day at work and still get almost 2 months on a toner cart from a cheap laser.

omg, as if ink-jets aren't already cheap enough. Walmart sells HP's by the pallet for $30 each, $20 on sale if the timing is right. That costs less than the ink BTW.

But if you insist on buying second hand with slippery pick-up tires and dried up ink good-luck-have-fun. While you are at it i have a half eaten sandwich i'll be putting up on the buy-n-sell soon if you are interested ;)
