A mouse mat is not required, but depending on your surface it can help... I know I like it since I made the switch for a simple but quite comfy Steelseries qck mouse pad. They can be had pretty cheap, here you find the size you want. I personally have the mini and can't complain about it.

Steelseries Qck is almost 5 stars on NCIX with 109 reviews. For 8 bucks, you can't really go wrong.

Jup I have used mine since they were released for my day-to-day pad across quite a few mice.

Worth a look.

Hell no, the HWC mouse pad is quite large. A lot larger then your standard mousepads.

Well, if a standard old school mouse pad was a 19 inch monitor, then I'd guess the HWC mousepad to be a 23 or 24 inch monitor by comparison.
