Speakers: on but silent. Power consumtion?

If I forget to leave my speakers on are they sucking up much juice? An older Altec Lansing 2.1 setup.
If it's a model dependent thing, I'll have to look into it, but a general idea would still be nice.

maybe up to 5 watt if it's a old unit but I wouldn't say more than that.

Depends on the amp design, but most likely it is either a class AB or class D, meaning that the leakage current when the unit is off would be much less than 1W. Chances are the highest power consumption would come from the LED indicating that it's on.

I have Logitech 2.1 and Klipsch Promedia sets. According to my power meter, the Logiech consumes 4W when idling while the Promedias consume 1W at most.

Hmm, I wouldn't have guessed that, I would have assumed that they would have much better quiescent current control. But then again, if you're driving it from the wall, then 1W/115V = ~8.5mA of quiescent current, which isn't too bad. Of course, I'm used to trying to keep the quiescent current below 100µA, so even 8mA seems like a lot to me.

Edit: Come to think of it, that 8mA probably is mostly the LED, I'm also used to working with 13.5Vdc (automotive).

My old Altec Lansing 2.1 system from ~2004 draws 7W (yep, seven watts) according to my BluePlanet meter even when it's "off". I only have it plugged in when I don't feel like using my headphones.

It's still not as bad as my Rogers cable box which draws over 15W unless it's unplugged I put that on an old Christmas tree timer so it's only being a parasite for half the day.
