Canopus Analog-to-Digital Video Conversion ADVC55 IEEE 1394 Interface

Hey all, just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this item, if not, what else would be good for transferring old VHS to PC to make DVD copies?

Maybe times have changed, but I spent a good 2 months beating my head against a wall trying to get an external HDD to work over firewire for media streaming. At that time, the issue appeared to be firewire controller specific, but after all the crap I went through, I vowed to avoid firewire like the plague and haven't gone back for a second look since.

Well, the only other ones I'm finding are these cheaper USB versions http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=27...acture=Diamond but so far most of the reviews I've read leave a little to be desired. I don't really want an expensive unit, I want to take old family VHS tapes and convert them to digital for my aunt but since I know the quality is not that great to begin with (8mm cam on VHS) I'm leary of using a cheapy unit.

Any suggestions/help would be appreciated :thumb:

Yeah, I looked at that too 3.0, have you used it?....I'm still not sold on cheapy ones based on reviews from current owners, I guess the best way to find out is buy it n' try it.

I do have one, output is fine (don't ask too much of it) - but I'm seriously considering the one you linked...

That one is still my 1st choice, based on what I've read it may be worth the extra money, most of the tapes I need to transfer are very old (over 25 yrs!) and I'm concerned the cheaper ones will drop too many frames and it'll come out like crap. I may try the cheapy and just return it if I don't like it, restocking fee for a $40 item won't kill me if I have to pay it..lol.
