My System Specs

Default Atheros based wlan card vs intel based.

Looking to buy a wireless N card for a laptop, but can't decide on who to go with, Atheros or Intel. I want to be able to use aircrack-ng, so I'm leaning towards the Atheros based chipset but i don't know which one i should go for, links between the two are below:

Intel Wifi 5100 Wireless N 802.11N Mini PCI-E Card 300M on eBay.ca (item 180512099518 end time 23-Jul-10 22:35:54 EDT)
Atheros AR5B95 AR9285 802.11B/G/N Half Mini PCI-E Card on eBay.ca (item 130375347107 end time 14-Aug-10 04:59:03 EDT)

And will a half sized mini PCI-E card effect performance vs full sized?

The size of the port is the same, the size of the card is not. It's sure that a full size probably ( that's just a probably ) have more chip to send and receive info from the antenna. Personally I would go for the intel but you have to make sure it fit in your lappy first. If your laptop can only use HalfSized card then your screw.

it uses a full sized one.
My main concern is that the half sized one will stretch the antennas to far, and either prevent me from being able to move the screen back to far, or just snap off.

I'd go with Intel if you want performance and reliability.

However beware of eBay. I haven't had any luck with the Intel cards I got off there. I bought a 4695AGN which ended up being only a 4695AG and I bought a WiFi Link 5300 which ended up being a Lenovo model that would only work on Lenovos. I sold it to somebody on here with a Lenovo and it worked great for them though.
