i want to buy one for my mom... she uses it to communicate with her friend or relationship at very distance...

do you suggest to buy a cheaper but good quality... any brand is fine... i know logitech is popular... and good...?

low budget like 30... or lower...

btw mircrophone would be nice addition...

I have a logitech one with a mic on it I paid about 30 bucks for... it's not terrible, but nothing to brag about either.. I don't use the mic because it sucks compared to my actual mic, but it's there.

I think Microsoft webcams have a bit better quality.

I was able to find a microsoft VX 6000 in original packaging on ebay for $27 including shipping. No DOA gurantee and the resolution is great. I use mine to keep in touch in touch with friends and family back home. The software interface is also very easy to use and works great in conjunction with windows live messenger.

My sister got one of these a couple months ago.
NCIX.com - Buy Syba CL-CAM63003 1.3 Megapixel USB 2.0 Driverless Webcam PC & Mac - CL-CAM63003 In Canada.
Image quality is not that great but it seems to work just fine and as far as we tested it lives up to it's driverless name(well, no user installed drivers that is). It worked fine on a notebook running ubuntu as I recall, an old PPC Mac running 10.4, notebook running 32bit XP as well as a desktop running 64bit vista.

They were recently on sale for $20 on NCIX IIRC but I suppose I would really only suggest it if you needed compatibility with many operating systems.

Industry standards:

Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 > on top of monitor style
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/we.../3056&cl=ca,en

Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF > side of monitor style with movement tracking
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/we.../3480&cl=ca,en

Don't let the high MSRP deter you.. they often go on sale for $80ish.. I grabbed a bunch of refurb Orbit AF for $60 each before.

* Note, some older Logitech models may look the same as the above.. but you can tell the current gens from the "Carl Zeiss Tessar" brand name around the lens.
