OC and 4 gig often doesn't play nice with a quad, 8 Gig might be pushing it. :)

420mhz FSB is a normal limit for QX9650. going higher will require excessive VTT and chipset volts. 333x12 or 400x10 is the easiest to attain 4ghz, 445x9 is almost impossible for the majority of QX9650...even for my "cherry chip" that does 4ghz @ 1.3v.

I tried upping the voltage to 1.4 and tried for 4 (400x10) again and managed to play about 3 hours of the Doom3 expansion pack I found in Staples bargain bin the other day before the temp alarm in PCProbe went off like Red Alert on a destroyer at 65C. This tells me I can probably do 4 stable in most regular activities without a problem but for anything intensive or long term will require additional cooling. Interestingly enough the voltage reported in CPUZ is about 0.05v less than that set in BIOS so a setting of 1.4 was actually 1.344.

Don't forget the half-multi's - just recently determined that my chip doesn't mind 425fsb at all, and 9.5x425 gives me just a hair over 4Ghz. Every bit helps, right?

You bet. Quads communicate over the FSB, and they do seem quite limited until 450 or so, and although I can bench mine a fair bit higher, 24/7 stable max I have is 433 without much tweaking. Increasing FSB volts up to 1.35, I can get 445...and then I'm lost in the land of GTL tweaking....

Well a bit of testing and it seems the memory doesn't much care for anything over 420, as before. I tried 430 and even bumping vdimm to 2.1 it wasn't happy. So I set things back to 400 FSB, vdimm @ 1.95v gives me 7-7-7-20 2T and processor at 4 GHZ (x10) and 1.4v. It seems stable here and temps don't seem too bad (idle about 37C, sustained load about 65-70C) so this looks like my max stable without upgrading the cooling. And since I'd like to keep the rig reasonably quiet (though I may change the fan on the cpu heatsink) that means liquid cooled and I'm not ready to go that route yet.
