Default OCing q9550 on stock heatsink?

I tried playing around with the FSB settings in the BIOS, and set it @ 400mhz (default is 333mhz). This makes for a clock speed of 400mhz X 8.5 = 3.4ghz. Every other option is set on auto (I did not manually change the voltage). I monitored the temps on idle and on load. On idle, it is similar to the stock 2.83ghz @ around 46C. On load, it stabilizes to around 65C.

My question: is 65C too high for the stock cooler? Should I buy a third party one? My RAM is 800mhz so my FSB can only go max 400mhz, so I presume the highest OC i'll get is @ 3.4ghz.

Youll find that most people are uncomfortable with load temps over 65-70 degrees (I am), and heat is hard on electronics.

I'd suggest spending some money on an aftermarket cooler, like the OCZ Vendetta 2 or Xigmatek - HDT-S1283. Both can be found for under $40 and are excellent coolers. See reviews on this site.

Simply put: don't do it. I use a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and since I bought that there have been several excellent alternatives show up as SugarJ has pointed out.

The Accelero though has done more to lower my overall case and CPU temps than I could have imagined.
