Default Oc for Gaming

In order to help stop my Overclocking obsession I need to know where does the increased Mhz stop helping the gaming ?

I guess it stopped long ago, but I am currently using a E6700 @ 3.5.

thanks

Short answer: it does and it doesn't. It depends on the individual game, your GPU and whether you're GPU bound or CPU bound.

For example if I'm running a game on a 7600GT, it can only output so much information from the game "kernel". Past a certain point, it doesn't matter how quickly information is passed as the GPU will only be able to process so much. Now if you're trying to run Crysis on an E1200 with a 9800GTX GPU, the limiter would be the speed of the CPU.

Do I find most games have a increased framerate running my CPU at 4.0Ghz vs. stock? Yes, absolutely. Can I tell the difference between 120 and 140 fps on CounterStrike? No. Once a game gets beyond 60 fps, I don't think you can tell as your monitor only refreshes 60 times per second.

In short: Twist your E6700 until it screams.

Thank you,

As for making the e6700 scream, my mobo is doing the screaming right now..... I have an Asus P5N-T and the Vdroop is so high that when I put the max allowed v-core (1.6) it goes down to 1.52 in occt. And at that v-core (1.52) I cant get 3.6 stable, I mean, I boot and all but I have error quite fast under torture test.

Anyway I guess I could Oc my xfx 8800 gt 512 Mg..... this should give me FPS :)

This is entirely conjecture, but are you sure there isn't another setting that's borking your OC right now? That's some pretty serious Vcore, even most 65nm Quads (the newer steppings, anyway) can be made rock-solid at 3.6 with no more than 1.450.

I hope you are using water or some other kind of exotic cooling not just air. Or else with a high vcore like that I would think your chip will have a very short lifespan.

Ok I guess I need to be more precise,

First, my chip is a B2 stepping, the max v-core is 1.50 according to intel. I went up to 1.60 (1.52 under load) by sheer frustration because I was not able to make anything stable and it still did not do the trick. I backed up from there, I am now 1.45, 1.40 under load and running 3.5. When I stop being lazy I wanted to see where I could back it down again.

Yes I use water, and all along the temperature never went higher than 65 C under load. After reading around and around I decided that my Max intel T-case was 65 C (60 + the 5c average)

Yeah, the B2's seem to frequently need over 1.45 to go beyond 3.5GHz, with quite a few needing in the 1.5-1.55 range. Whether you want to run up there is ultimately up to you, I suppose. As for why you're earlier high-voltage attempts didn't get you any higher, it's possible that your chip is hitting its wall, but I still have to wonder whether there's another BIOS setting holding you back.
