My System Specs

Default 3930K @ 5 Ghz 1080Ti SLi Boost 2.074 Ghz

Ok...so finally fgured out I re-assembled my Supremacy EK Block 90 degrees skewed resulting in CPU BSOD (due to overheating)....drained (again)...and back up n running..CPU at 5 Ghz (all 6 Cores and 12 Threeads)....GPU's +67 Core / +285 Memory.....(Boost to 2074 Mhz)......some results:

Timespy: 15.610
https://www.3dmark.com/spy/2816964

Firestrike: 29.195
https://www.3dmark.com/fs/14261599

Firestrike Extreme: 21.835
https://www.3dmark.com/fs/14261484

Mark 11: 33.193
https://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/12515020

Other than the M.2 support not really sure if there would be much "upgrade" going Z370 8700K.....I mean this 3930K is 6 Core 12 Thread and able to bench 5 - 5.2 Ghz......perhaps still 7900X ...lower clock speeds but overall X299 vs Z370....we'll see....

btw ...running the 3930K at 5 Ghz for these tests Max Temp on a couple of cores 66c...the rest were 57c - 62c.......and this Supremacy is aging

Here's how the recent gens stack up single-core...all out. There may be some gains in multi-core stuff, but I suspect you are not in bad shape.

SuperPI 32M 5 GHz Challenge Leaderboard (November 21, 2017) - Luumi (FI) Fastest at 5 minutes and 52.750 seconds with Skylake

My 6 Core / 12 Thread Processor running at 4.8 - 5 Ghz is absolutely fine ......it does lack native PCI 3.0 though and Id like both 32 GB of 3200 Mhz RAM as well as M.2 SSD ......I'll very likely update sometime soon .....standby for "Antares" .....will it be Z300 or X299 .....

Rjbarker you can also consider AMD's X399 Threadripper platform which offers up to 16c/32t on a quad channel platform with the latest features and io from AMD and NVMe raid is also free (unlike Intels X299).

Regardless of that X399 in my opinion is the HEDT of 2017 unlike X299 (which uses TIM processors even on the flagship 18c/32t). I understand where and what you mean however AMD is back on the HEDT and on the consumer mainstream platforms. So if you were looking to really upgrade your platform I would recommend either X370, X399 or Z370 Coffee Lake. X299 doesn't make much sense or point at this time as a HEDT.

Cool to see how well the old 3930k stacks up against modern processors. Really dissuades me from upgrading.

I'm in the same boat. Itching for an upgrade, but no real reason to. X299 doesn't seem to offer much for the price over Z370, and neither offers a massive performance boost over the 3930k on X79; just things like m.2, usb C, DDR4, etc.

I might get a new case and whatnot and just transfer my 6 year old hardware over for now.

Yes, the Sandy Bridge core is still quite competitive. There have been incremental improvements in the subsequent generations, to be sure.
