Default Q6600+EVGA750i FTW

Hey,

So finally I expect all of my new parts to arrive by the end of this week. I have a lot of plans for this new system. While I've built a lot of high end gaming machines in my day (I average 1 to 2 new systems a year) I've never really overclocked very much if at all. Only dabbled in my settings for fun and never left it running at anything more than stock. I've read every guide linked in these forums and of course done every bit of research so I think I'm prepared.

Just curious if anyone has OC'd an EVGA 750i FTW with a Q6600 before and or if anyone can offer any specific tips for this set up?

My system is below in my sig now, if you need more info let me know. I'd like to hit 3.0ghz or even 3.2/3 ish if it's safe and stable. I'm using a Scythe Katana 2 to cool it but if this thing won't cut it for 3.0ish I'm not against buying something else.

Thanks again HWC!

You can't go wrong with a Thermal Right Ultra 120 extreme for better cooling and higher overclocks. I have no personal experience with the 750i FTW but the reviews I have read say that overclocking with that board is pretty simple and runs very stable, taking the same CPU to 3.6ghz. Individual results do vary dependent on the hardware you have, although I am sure that everyone here will assist you in getting the most stable clocks.

I was concerned with the 120 fitting in my case, and I couldn't find anyone online to confirm that it did so I bought this one and planned to go to a local store for a cooler that I could bring back if it didn't fit.

It will fit with 0.5cm to spare but don't qoute me on that, I guess the only way to know is to test it out.

Yeah, I'll take the case/mobo/chip down to a store here in Toronto and look. Thanks for your help, once I get to the nitty gritty I'm sure I'll have many more questions.

Once you do get confirmation on what fits well, be sure to drop us some pictures so that you can be the "authority" on the subject you were looking for yourself. :)

Well the parts arrive today; I plan on cutting holes and painting my case tonight/tomorrow and building it late Sat/Sunday. One question I have - right now I've got the Scythe Katana 2 that I figure will suffice for about 3.0ghz on this Q6600 GO - I'll probably buy a 120 later on.

My question is about lapping, i'm fairly confident in doing it to my Heatsink base.. I'm nervous as shit to do it for my Q6600. I did get the chip for free but I'd rather not fuck it up anyways :P

Do you guys think I should bother lapping both, or one of these parts at all? This is my first serious OC; I've dabbled in it but nothing more than presets on ASUS boards etc..

Thanks again! I'll post some pics in the WIP forums once I get going and everything arrives (talked to purolator, they'll be here in an hour!!!) Weeee

The Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme fits fine, in a Antec NineHundred. I know this, as I´m looking at it right..... now. Not a whole lot of space between the heatpipe tops, and the side of the case, but.... there is enough, and it fits. And the TRUE is a really, really, really good aircooled heatsink. Looks good too. I would love the "black edition", I´ve heard rumours about.

Hey, once you receive it, can you tell us what the FPO/Batch # is for your Q6600?

It would be much appreciated
