My System Specs

Default Finally OC'd my MSI GTX 460 Cyclone 768mb

Well...my family was out the evening, so I decided to play around with my gtx 460 (a relatively old GPU I know, but it is serving me well).

Ref 460 run 675 core and 3600 effective memory.
My card came factory OCed at 725 core

30 minutes of playing around and I have it running 825mhz core and 4000mhz effective on the memory at stock voltages and stock fan profile. Still staying cool and quiet with that great cyclone cooler on it.

I don't think it is near its limits yet, but I am happy for the time being. +100mhz on the core (+150 from reference), and +400mhz effective on the memory for that little effort was kind of nice. Haven't stress tested a lot, but ran it through 3dmark11 for a quick check without issue (did it a couple times on the way to that OC).

I just checked the old review SKYMTL did on a card the same as mine and he managed to get a good bit higher... he got 868mhz core and 4252mhz memory... gives me something to push a bit higher towards in the future if I ever feel the need.

Overclocks really don't mean. You need to run some benchmarks to see if you are actually doing any good or just adding uneeded stress to the card.

Forgot to put info about that into my first post.

Ran 3DMark 11 on performance. Scores did go up a decent amount:

3Dmark 3472 @ reference, and 4133 with the OC.

I will try some games when I get a chance and see what kind of FPS increase that yields.

Ive owned four of these gtx 460 cyclone 768mb cards, and each one could run at 900mhz on the core, provided you up the vcore to 1087 mV. This resulted in temps around 80c while folding, which i consider perfectly good. As i was folding, i didnt oced the memory at all, but im sure you could get your core higher.

On a side note, use OCCT to stress test your gpu: it is really a good testing program!

I just remembered that Just Cause 2 has a build in benchmark as well. With high to very high settings and 4xAA @ 1680x1050 during the Dark Tower benchmark reference clocks = 46.42FPS and with the OC it jumped to 54.85. Pretty happy with that.

Thanks for the info. I will look into OCCT. I don't think I will push voltage from stock. But if you were able to get that high I likely could get the core to 850 at stock voltage...may give it a go and see if I can get the memory up another bit. I figure these 768mb would respond well to the memory OC given the reduced memory bandwidth.

Well curiosity got to me. Just spent the last hour and a half playing around some more. It ran without issue at stock voltage 850mhz core and 4200mhz on the memory (never hit a limit yet on either). After benching on the way up to that with each though I noticed pretty much no gain with the jump from 4100 to 4200 on the memory (based on Just cause 2 bench and 3D mark 11), so I have now settled on 850 core 4100 memory.

3D mark up to 4242 and the JC2 Dark Tower bench is up to 57.47 (both up from 3472 and 46.42fps respectively). That's a 24% improvement in benched fps...not too shabby at all.

The JC2 Concrete Jungle bench went from 42.19 to 48.12FPS...a much smaller but still respectable 14% increase.

Now in the next few days I have to see if it translates into a similar gain during actual gaming.

And for anyone that cares GPU temps haven't exceeded 49 deg with the stock auto fan profile (room temp is just over 22 deg). Power consumption went up 15 watts during the Dark tower bench (never checked in other tests) 205w up to 220w from the wall. Stress testing got up to max 270watts from the wall, but I don't know what it was before the OC.

Very interesting does the cooler actually touch the ram/vrm or does it use that heat tape?

It doesn't touch, but the ram should be very well cooled by airflow (basically its just around the heatsink), and the vrm would get airflow as well, but it is farther out.

Played around with some in game fps in Sniper Elite V2 (not a benchmark, but running the same profile through a section of a level where fps seemed to be the lowest overall...avg fps through most areas are in the high 50s-mid 60s).

For the section avg fps at stock clocks = 41, memory OC only = 43 fps, GPU OC only = 46fps, GPU and memory OC = 49 fps... or around a 19.5% improvement in game.
