Default Country Cup 2013

Well its that time again. Time to show off how Canada punches above its weight in the overclocking world. Last year Canada took 7th, higher than even such countries like the United States and UK. Can we make the top 5 this year?

Country Cup 2013 Homepage

Competition background

Looks like some pretty heavy GPU stages this year and less legacy stuff

Stage 1, Nov 1 Dec 27, 3DMark 11 Performance Full Out: For this stage, all hardware is allowed. Per country, one score is required. The winner of the stage acquires 50 points.

Stage 2, Nov 1 Dec 23, Cloud Gate 1xGPU (i7+NV): for this stage only Core i7 CPUs are allowed. The following video cards are allowed: GTX 670, GTX 570, and GTX 470. Per country three scores are required, one with each GPU. The winner of the stage acquires 40 points.

Stage 3, Nov 1 Dec 23, Vantage Dual GPU (i5+AMD/ATI): for this stage only Core i5 CPUs are allowed. The following video cards families are allowed: Radeon HD 6000, Radeon HD 5000, and Radeon HD 4000. Per country three scores are required, one with each GPU family. The winner of the stage acquires 40 points.

Stage 4, Nov 1 Dec 23, HWBOT Prime (i3/Pentium): For this stage, only Core i3 or Pentium CPUs are allowed. There is no restriction on the GPU. Per country, three scores are required, each with a unique CPU core. The winner of the stage acquires 40 points.

Stage 5, Nov 1 Dec 19, Aquamark (AMD FX): For this stage, only AMD FX CPUs are allowed. There is no restriction on the GPU. Per country, five scores are required, each with a unique CPU core. The winner of the stage acquires 30 points.

Stage 6, Nov 1 Dec 19, Catzilla 576P (AMD APU): for this stage only AMD APUs are allowed. You may only use the onboard APU. Per country, five scores are required, each with a unique GPU core. The winner of the stage acquires 30 points.

Stage 7, Nov 1 Dec 19, 3DMark03 (legacy): For this stage, there is no restriction on either CPU or GPU. Per country, five scores are required, each with a unique GPU socket. The winner of the stage acquires 30 points.

Stage 8, Nov 1 Dec 15, SuperPI 32M Low Clock Challenge: For this stage, there is no restriction on either CPU or GPU. The CPU frequency is capped at 4000.01 MHz. Per country seven scores are required, each with a unique CPU socket. The winner of the stage acquires 20 points.

Post your thoughts on the best combinations and if we can get a schedule going of how people want to participate. Any thoughts on the best way to attack this are also welcome!

Good luck Canada!

Well, below I have listed what I could manage. Anything marked with an * means that I would be willing to buy hardware should we need it. For stage 3, I would need to pickup a second card.

Hopefully we can get enough people involved early on to figure out what is missing. Some of these categories require a fair amount of submissions so numbers will be the key. If you have the hardware, but don't have the knowledge and want to help out just say so! One of the experienced benchers will be sure to help you out.

There is a small number of benchers in the GTA that we could possibly get together and get some benching done. I'd definitely be game for something like this - Grab some LN2, some beer and bench away!

GTA/Southern Ontario Benchers:

Dead Things
Rasparthe
HobieCat
Slaughter
(Your name here )

Stage 1: I'm out - GTX580 Sli would be my best config and I know we can beat that.
Stage 2: 3770K + 470* or 570*
Stage 3: 2500K + 4870+1* & 5870+1*
Stage 4: S775 Pentiums*
Stage 5: Any CPU* + GTX 580 Sli
Stage 6: Any APU* + GPU*
Stage 7: 3770K + GTX 580 PCIe
Stage 8: 3770K

Thumbs up Oveclocking Tweaking and Benchmarking

Don't know how to oc very well. Perhaps this would help me.

Likely a lot but what has to be done,....?

I do have a 3930k, 3960x and a 4930k, the last of which I'm about to fire up today for the 1st time.

Damn RMAs take forever. Pulled board for replacement and now I'm putting it back as no boards are currently available.

For this contest the most important thing of all is to get the needed submissions for each stage. Even missing one sub for a stage can cost you a large amount of points. A stock result is better than not submitting a result at all.

As for the best combinations for each stage, probably something like this:

Stage 1: The best we can manage, Socket 2011 and Titans? 780s? R9 290s?

Stage 2: Of course, 2011 i7 chips would probably work best, but i7 Haswell or Ivy should be fine, not sure how many cores Cloud Gate benefits from.

1. 670
2. 570
3. 470

Stage 3: i5 rules out the socket 2011. i5 Haswell or Ivy or Sandy will be boss here.
1. 2x 6970
2. 2x 5870
3. 2x 4890

Stage 4: 3 different i3 or Pentium cores will mean that socket 1156 will most likely give the best scores since its the last time the dual cores could reach 5Ghz without much trouble. Sandy Bridge i3s should work just fine as well.
1. i3 Haswell - i3 4340/4130
2. i3 Clarkdale - i3 5xx
3. i3 Ivy - i3 32xx

Stage 5: 5 subs using only FX cores, some legacy here unless there are less well known new FX cores. Aquamark doesn't scale with cores so using a FX 4100 or FX 8120 should provide the same result if clocked to the same
1. Piledriver - Vishera - FX 8350 with best available GPU
2. Bulldozer - Zambezi - FX 8150 with best available GPU
3. Windsor - FX-62 with best available GPU ( or could use the Socket F FX-74 here)
4/5 Toledo - FX-60 with best available GPU
4/5 San Diego - FX-55/57 with best available GPU
4/5 Clawhammer FX-53/55 with best available GPU

Stage 6: Laptops are definitely going to be needed in this stage, it appears there are only 3 APU cores among the AMD APU desktop chips and as far as I can tell only 5 different APU cores (with so many different chips it is a little tough to tell though) Partial list of some of the different chips and cores:

1: WinterPark core: HD 6370D (Processors: E2-3200)
HD 6410D (Processors: A4-3300, A4-3400)

2: BeaverCreek core: HD 6530D (Processors: A6-3500, A6-3600, A6-3650, A6-3670K)
HD 6550D (Processors: A8-3800, A8-3850, A8-3870K)
HD 6480G (Processors: A4-3300M, A4-3310MX)
HD 6520G (Processors: A6-3400M, A6-3410MX)
HD 6620G (Processors: A8-3500M, A8-3510MX,A8-3530MX)

3: Wrestler core: HD 6250 GPU, (Processors: C-30, C-50)
HD 6310 GPU, (Processors: E-240, E-300, E-350)

4: Ontario core: HD 6290 GPU, (Processors: C-60)
HD 6320 GPU, (Processors: E-450)

5: Devestator: All Trinity and Richland APUs

Stage 7: Interesting stage that requires the use of all the different possible GPU sockets:

1: PCIe
2: AGP
3: Hybrid (APU and discrete card in Crossfire)
4: Integrated (believe that this includes APU chips)
5: PCI

Stage 8: A difficult stage that is going to require 7 subs, which also means we need 7 different sockets that will even reach 5Ghz (although getting the 7 subs in is more important than hitting 5Ghz)

1: 1150
2: 2011
3: 1155
4: 1156
5: 1366
6: 775
7: AM3+

Lots of stuff for anybody to get involved in, if there is anything you definitely want to do, just post it up and I'll start putting up a schedule of stuff that people have reserved, so that anyone can see what is missing if they want to get involved in some stage or another.

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Some thoughts...

1: How significant a role does the Physics score play in 3DM11? Is there, for example, potential benefit to be gained from using, say, a 24(or more)-threaded machine instead of a 12-threader? Also, would I be correct in assuming that all ES hardware is forbidden like it was last year?

2: No experience with Cloud Gate, and none of the GPUs needed.

3: Have dual-5870s and a 4870 x2. Have a single 4890 as well in case somebody wants to borrow it to complete their dual setup or lend me theirs. I have no i5 chips, though, outside of Clarkdale, but willing to rectify that via acquisition if required.

4: I can do the Clarkdale sub - have an i3 550 and an i3 530 to see which one does better.

5: I can help fill in whatever gaps remain here. Have an FX-8350, FX-8120, FX-74, FX-60, FX-57. Aquamark has always seemed an oddly variable benchmark to me. I remember you had to delete some dll file or something and suddenly, your scores would double? Somehow I managed to post a higher score with a 9600 GT than I could with a GTS 450, which obviously makes no sense. So it would seem there are some tweaks to this benchmark that we should know, unless the wrapper took care of that.

6: I will be of limited assistance here, as I have just a A8-3870k or a A6-5400k.

7: Obviously, lots of fun to be had here. Probably my most valuable contribution would be in the PCI category as I have a PCI GT 430. I can contribute to any category needed, though. Or maybe AGP - as I also have an HD 4670 in AGP flavour.

8: Ditto for this - any category. I have 5.0-capable hardware and quality RAM for any of these sockets. The key to a low-clock challenge is using good RAM and doing at least some of the basic tweaks for 32M like using XP in LSC mode and running waza.

Also - just a quick note to say that any HWC OC team members who participate in the Country Cup (for Canada, or for any other country) will earn points in the HWC Championship Cup standings. More info on this will be posted Nov. 1.

Ok, if you guys could use my setup for this, whatever sub, let me know. I have 4 580s now.

Let me know which sub you want me to participate in. I do have 1 titan and a gts 450, though I didn't c a call for those.

Quad 580s definitely worth a shot at Stage 1, 3DM11. You've done 3DM11 runs before for the local post-your-score thread, right?

While got 'em in there, you might also want to take a run at our own SLI challenge this month: HWC Overclocking Challenge #6: SLI '03. I've set the bar quite low and desperately need somebody to raise it!

Then sub-in the Titan for Stage 7, 3DM03.

And, if you can get your 4930k - or any of the LGA2011 chips - at or close to 5.0, you can also pitch in a sub for Stage 8.

So yeah - there's a whole lot you could do!

Waiting for a new psu, but can hook up the 1200w if necessary.

I haven't had much luck with ocing so far, so 5 ghz is not gonna happen unless I get LOTS of help...hehehe

I know turbo got to 4.9 though.

Did a bit of reading, need help getting my oc higher. Anyone who can help it would b greatly appreciated.

It's for Canada man!!!

Ok, I have 2 reference 580s and 2 MSi Twin Frozrs.
