My System Specs

Default Overclocking/unlocking 6950

Hey Guys, recently I noticed my that my card was struggling with Tombraider on ultimate settings (1920x1200) so I decided to unlock the extra shaders and try some overclocking. The unlocking went fine (did not flash a 6970 bios but instead used my original bios and unlocked just the extra shaders). I haven't overclocked an AMD card in a little while so I was surprised to see they no longer have the "autotune" function and instead have 4 sliders (GPU/Mem/Fan/Power). So, I bumped up the GPU to max (840) and the memory half way (1275ish) and added 5% more to the power and it seems all stable (temps are fine as well). Is there anything else I should be doing? The max GPU speed wasn't very high so should I jump over to a different program to overclock? Suggestions? Also, I use to have this card underwater and now it is using the stock blower style fan so can somebody suggest a good aftermarket HSF for me? Thanks

You "overclocked" to 840 and 1275? That seems low, is it a reference card? My stock clocks are 880 and 1300, but I have a toxic edition.

Pick up a free copy of msi afterburner if you want to be able to overclock to dangerous levels.

The 6950 runs very hot overclocked so I would look for a dual fan solution. My 6k rpm fans are really loud vs the dual fan asus 6950 (I own four 6950s).

Yes, it is a stock/reference version. 840 is my max the CCC will let me go on the slider. I was looking at MSI AB and I will give that a try but I am worried about temps. Under water this card was great but now that it is back on air I am noticing the GPU/Mem getting pretty hot (but surprising the VRMs aren't).

Weid, MSI afterburner only lets me go to 840 mhz GPU as well. Am I missing something?

Looks like I need to do some reg tweaking to eliminate the 840 mhz wall.

Ok, I got the clock speeds unlocked but it is voltage locked still. I can't even get it to clock to 880 without the graphics driver giving me a "stop responding" crash. I ran it at 850 without any problems and temps were ok so any ideas on how to unlock the voltage?

Nevermind, I figured it out, now I get to play with voltages.
