Any harm in underclocking a GPU? Upgraded my son's video card and now I have his. I can no longer game (vertigo) so don't need it to run all out. The only reason I took my old card out was it was preventing my monitor from coming back on from sleep mode. Anyway, any problem with running the card (HD4870) at as low as it allows with the "Graphics Overdrive" utility? |
None, other than it will be slower than normal. |
Nothing wrong with underclocking |
Thanks! |
Been trying it out...doesn't always seem too happy about it. When moving to and from a youtube video, for instance, the screen does a lot of flashing. |
It won't hurt the card but it will affect the performance, is there a reason why you don't want to leave it at stock? A 4870 will automatically run at slower speeds when its not in use and ramp up the performance when needed. Its a power saving feature if that is your concern. Leaving it at stock is probably alot easier and will provide the power savings and performance when needed. |
I run about 40w more at stock. My previous hd3870 was about 60w less. |
if your running afterburner you should set unofficial oc to 2 instead of 1 if your seeing flickering and it will lock your 2d and 3d at same mhz. this has been happening with the last couple drivers for some amd / ati users. |
