Most likely black rtv silicone. I figure just a dab in each corner just so the IHS doesn't slide around when latching.

My System Specs

Default

MVG 0904, i7 3770K de-lidded with CL Liquid Pro, open air setup:
45x100, 1.288V in CPU-Z, ~70C load on Corsair A50 with NF-P12 on "Silent" mode in BIOS.
46x100, 1.350V in CPU-Z, ~80C load on Corsair A50 with NF-P12 + NF-P14 both on "Silent" mode in BIOS.
I'm testing on a crappy, noisy Lite-On 300W PSU which buzzes under load and drowns out the fan noise.

In contrast, the delidded one I purchased from ontariotl is running
P8Z77-V Pro, i7 3770K de-lidded with CL Liquid Pro in Antec NSK4480 with GTX680 and a slow 400RPM NF-P12 exhaust and AX750 PSU:
45x100 1.30V in CPU-Z ~80 load on a HR-02 macho with a 450-500 RPM NF-P14
Inaudible from operating position. Tower is placed under my desk.

Once I find a backplate for my NH-D14 I'll swap it in place of the A50 open-air setup and see what the temperature difference is.

So compare to 2600k Sandy, 3770k Ivy they would overclock the same? well beside the heat issue.

I just got my 3770k, gonna test out how HOT ivy will be going 4.5GHZ on air.

If your aim is 4.5 GHz you won't have an issue with either SB or IB.
From my experience if you want higher than 4.5GHz you will need to dump a lot more voltage into IB. All of my old 2600K's hit 4.8GHz at less than 1.4V.

Also to update my last post, open-air cooling improved by about 2-3 C with the NH-D14 vs A50. Not worth the price difference at all.

I can hit 4.5GHz without problem on my 2500k at 1.37v

I got the hyper 212+ pull on the 3770k right now, saw some comparison online and it doesn't do that well during full load. Might get my hands on an NH-D14 or phanteks ph-tc14pe.

Maxed a testing board out last night that maxes out at 1.35V at that point I can get the 3770K to run at 4.7Ghz with minor stability issues or at 4.6Ghz for day to day never going above 60c on a cheap AIO.

Get a AIO water cooler

I did though about getting AIO watercooling, but for price / performance, the phanteks ph-tc14pe > all.

AIO watercooling vs phanteks ph-tc14pe is only 2-5c difference but in price wise, $130+ vs $89+
