Red face Overclocking AMD 6400+ temps

Well I did it. A personal goal. I finally broke 10,000 on the 3dMark06. No biggy for most here but an acomplishment for me since it took quite a bit of learning and work. For that I need to give a shout out to the members of HWC your discussions and guides which helped me to understand what I needed to do.

Here's my little pic I'm so proud of. Dunno why the 6400+ shows as sempron it just does apparently.

Here's a pic of the overclock. I've pushed my FSB as high as I could get it while balancing the component speeds: I've kept the HTT as close to 1Ghz as possible so it plays nice, I've got my PC-6400 Mushkins at 2.1v and 5-5-5-15 timings so they cooperate at 960Mhz and I have my CPU running nicely at 3.36Ghz.

Now here's the twist. Compared to all my other attempts this overclock should be stable. The thing is I'm worried about is the temps I've been getting during my Orthos Stressprime 2004 beta run. about 12mins in and I'm getting peaks of 65C, not the cores but the TMPIN0 or the ASUS probe CPU core temp. This proc is rated up to 63C.

So here's my question, do you think I can risk running it for 24hrs to test stability or should I seriously consider a new cooling solution? I have the Scythe Ninja with AS5, I could get a Scthe Zipang or wait longer and do the Watercooling thing. Of course I'm impatient. If I'm being to paranoid then I'd rather run the stability test as is. If from your collective experiences I'm going into chip killing territory then I'll hold off.

This is my HWmonitor screencap. I had just stopped orthos to get the cap' and it cooled quickly to 50C. What do you think? I'm running at 40C idle right now.

FYI: I'm running my HD2900 Pro at 750/2000 to get my 10,000+ 3dMark06 for those who want to know. It's the CPU/RAM overclock that put me over though I've had the GPU overclocked using Riva 2.07 for a while now.

I wouldn't be so worried about your HTT, I have a 5000+ BE and I run mine at 1500mhz.

I use:

300x11 = 3300mhz
htt 1500mhz
ram 942mhz

gpu @ 840/2600

I managed to reach 11K with one gpu, and now I'm trying for 13k with both.

Your temps are a little high. My idle temp is below 30 and load is low 40s. I am using a ninja copper, and the computer is in a cold place.

3367 seens a bit low, I figured it should have been able to go a smidgen higher then most 6000+, which seem to easily hit 3510.5, and I've just been to lazy to try for higher (think I need to start changing timings and the such).

Hmmm, I know that 3367 is low, but my goal was to break the 10,000 mark and still be stable. I spent a whole night trying to get it over 3400 and each time I did that my HTT went over 1100 and Orthos 2004 beta would crap out almost immediately so no stability. Not to mention the temps, I'm not sure I like the Scythe Ninja, it can't be my case it's got airflow in spades.

Vinster did you up your voltages to get that stable? I only upped my cpu voltage by .5, to 1.45.

I tried again, pushed it to 250 FSB, 3500Mhz, 1200 HTT, 1000Mhz 5-5-5-15 Ram, my collective performance test score went up but my 3dMark06 was only 10078 and my temps were running in the 50s idle and it wasn't stable, BSOD and spontaneous reboots.

I need a better cooling solution... I'll revisit this when I get one...

Ya that's much higher than I am running. I use 1.3875 Vcore, 1.4 NB. I think your CPU is on the larger process, I have the 65nm 5000+, so it generally runs on lower voltage and a bit cooler. Your processor should give slightly better performance numbers clock for clock.

Here's a idle to full load graph from OCCT. My box has access to some fairly cold (20 degrees tops) fresh air, and I have 2 x 120mm intake fans, and 2 x 120mm exhaust fans, all in a NZXT HUSH case. The Ninja Copper dropped my temps over 10 degrees from my old Ninja Rev. 2, so maybe that's something for you to consider.

Comparing 3dM score is kind of useless since we have different video cards. My cpu score @ 3250mhz is 2364. What's yours?

Thanks for the info Vinster, I appreciate it. Yah, the 6400+ is a 95nm process 120W. I also have the 5000+ BE in my other PC, see sig. but It's an office one with integrated graphics so I didn't bother to push it. My wife uses it and she wants stability more than a fraction of a second better email ;). I'm looking into new cooling solutions. I'll post when I decided, but I may need to save up some $$$.
