The Quick and Dirty OC.

As you all know the E8400s are on back order till April 20th So in the next few weeks I'll have the rest of my stuff for my rig minus the processor. So I was thinking about playing around with a cheap Celeron 420 that can be had for $37.60 from DC. At this price I don't care if I blow the CPU up.

As the title of the thread stats I'm gonna try and quick and dirty OC. First here is the list of parts then I will tell you my plans.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (Rev 2.0)
Memory: 2x1GB G-Skill F2 PC2-8500 DDR2-1066 5-5-5-15
Video Card: XFX 8800GT
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7,200rpm SATAII
PSU: Undecided (Between OCZ, Corsair and Mushkin, at least 550W)
Case: Coolermaster CM690
CPU HSF: Thermalright Ultima-90 w/Scythe 92mm
Case Cooling: 6x120mm fans

My plan is to set the FSB to 400MHz which I know is possible with the Gigabyte P35-DS3L board. Then I will set the vcore to 1.30v. My memory I'll probably set to 2.5 multiplier which will give me 1000MHz memory speed and see what happens.
This will OC the processor from 1.6GHz to 3.2GHz a 100% OC.

Since you don't care about the CPU...you could go all out and go for 100%+

Set the VCore to as high as you can cool, and overclock away. Awaiting results...


As for your PSU, I'd say go with Corsair. I have an HX520, and it's top quality and maybe the quietest component in my system. I think the Antec Earthwatts are also worth a look.

I almost got one of these instead of my HX520. I hear the newer ones have sleeved cables, and the pics are of the old ones.

I have a Corsair HX620W.. i just wanted it cause it was modular and apparantly good quality.. i'd recommend it to anyone..

I had a corsair VX 550W before and it was awesome. I was thinking maybe the 520 cause it's modular

Good Luck Buddy! You can do it! And that FSB will go to 515MHz....Just make sure you cool your NB!

Already got 40mm scythe fan for my NB.

Honestly I'd be happy with a 2.6Ghz OC or even a 3.0GHz OC at the most. Once I get my E8400 I'll use the Celeron in another rig (yet to be built) for either a HTPC or a dedicated folding/benching rig.
