Need help getting my R3E, i7-980 to 4.1ghz ram 2000mhz
I'm new to the site, and overclocking in general so I thought i'd right a post, since I'm stumped right now.
Currently im running these parts
- Rampage III Extreme Asus MB (90-MIBC10-G0AAY00Z)
- Intel i7-980 3.33ghz 12mb L3 Cache (BX8061317980)
- CoolerMaster V10 Heatsink (RR-B2P-UV10-GP)
- one EVGA GTX 460 GFX Card (01G-P3-1370-TR)
- Corsair XMS3 12GB DDR3 2000MHZ Pro Ram (CMX12GX3M3A2000C9)
- Corsair tx850w Power supply (CMPSU-850TX)

Basically what my problem is, i've been trying all day to get a stable 4.1ghz with my ram at/close to 2000mhz, now keep in mind im on a locked i7-980 not the i7-980x. so im bound to a multiplier of 25
so far I got my cpu to 4.1ghz (164x25) but the problem is my ram. I can only get it too, 1644mhz.
there is an option for 1973mhz but my pc will not boot with that option.
here are some pics, if you know anything about my combined parts, and you think you have a fix.
Please let me know, like I said I'm new to this, so here are some questions.
are my power options to high or low?
What setting should i raise when i raise my ram's Mhz?
If my ram is tested for 2000mhz, would it be possible to select an option within 2000mhz-2200mhz?
When i try to set the Dram freq to 2000mhz it dosent work. what other settings should i be adjusting?
My Ram is SPD Speed 1333Mhz Tested Speed 2000Mhz ...SPD latency 9-9-9-24 Tested Latency 9-10-9-27
Any ideas? I am unsure what settings to adjust now.
First off, you don't have to run the multipler at 25, you can lower it and increase the blk allowing you to fine tune what you want your ram to run at depending on the ratio. Also, you are going to need much more vCore or core voltage to hit that frequency and keep it stable. Try 1.3 or 1.275 vCore.
is it locked at a max of x25? and thank you for the information.
and is it just the Vcore that looks a lil off?
*edit* I tried what you said, 1.3vcore, (its there now).. and i tried uping the Dram but no boot.
I tried keeping all same settings and changing to 200x20, and no boot.
so now im back to 164x25 with Dram 1644mhz
i've also noticed, little to no difference in the 3dmark11 Performance test, still p4220
i gave my gtx460 overclocked from 720/1440 1800/3600 to 850/1700 2000/4000
and Look at these comparisons, this is crazy my 3.3ghz scored same as my 4.1ghz OC..why?
Result the only thing i can think of is it's because my Dram is 1644Mhz when my cpu is 4.1Ghz (cant get it higher, why?)
But when my cpu is stock 3.3Ghz and Dram 2006Mhz i score the same? is this OC garbage? or is the Dram really making that much of a difference?

just to let everyone know i have obtained 4.2ghz (200x21) with 2005Mhz Dram
I shall post pictures of my specs tomorrow for those of you with similar systems, its to late now.
I ran Geekbench at stock PC speeds(3.3ghz & about 1000mhz ), and got 11773,
now at 4,2ghz 2005mhz im getting (14800)
Boots twice as fast, and sems very stable for the little time i've been on it so far.

I hope you didn't increase the voltage delivered to your ram, you should not be running it over 1.65V for the most part.
To my knowledge your chip is locked at the x25 multiplier, however the blk is not locked (no one's is), running at a lower multiplier and a higher blk can usually allow you to hit more stable overclocks at lower vcore voltages.
Example would be running at 4GHz by doing x20 multiplier and 200 blk.
yes, thank you. I thought a "locked" cpu would be locked at a specific multiplier like x25
but im at 200x21 right now, and rock stable with Vcore 1.275, Dram voltage is set to 1.64 (to avoid warning)
and it is fine.
The Problem with getting my Dram from 1600mhz to 2000mhz was in the timing, it kept auto changing my dimm timing to 7-7-7-20 and it wouldnt boot. i changed it to 9-9-9-24 it booted but froze at windows logo loading screen, so i changed it to 9-10-9-27 and it works amazing now.
so im curious how can i be at 200x21 with a locked cpu? i guess im locked at a maximum mulitplier of 25x
or some sort of range, like x20-x25. if anyone knows please respond.
I have run this OC with Prime95 & Realtemp's sensor test, and these were the results.
looks pretty good to me for air cooled, and only 3 fans in my case. (6 including the gpu, and 2 cpu fans)
pushing +0.9Ghz but if any of you think otherwise please let me know.
no games or anything will raise my cpu to that level normally no? i'd expect average max to be 70%
Intel's site says this about the i7-980 "TCASE 68.8°C" is that their recommended max temp?

1: Do my OC settings look stable? they feel stable, but keep in mind this is my first time.
2: Intel lists this with the i7-980 on their site. "TCASE 68.8°C" what does this mean? is it a recommended max temp to reach? my temps maxed at around 74°C-77°C with 100% use on 12 threads, is this bad? i thought below 80°C-90°C was decent, anything above 90°C-100°C is bad!
3: Will my CPU ever even reach 100% on normal applications/games?
I run Lotro at everything Maxed DX11 with 1920x1080, i hit 60-130fps (depending on where in game i am) and my cpu only uses 5-20% usage
4: Is this OC ok for 24/7? will my parts degrade much faster?

I know my CPU fan is the V6 and not the V10 but I was told it should suffice for overclocking. Especially since my case has multiple fans directly on top and near my CPU fan location.
I am going to try and mimic your settings and see what I can achieve. Any updates would be great to give me a great starting point. I am building the computer tonight and will report back with my tweaks.
I would recommend going max 4.0 with your cpu cooler untill you test it fully. I'm running a 4.0ghz (167x24) 24/7 now the i7-980 from what i understand typically likes Odd Multipliers better, but 24 seems solid. and Even XMP Mode on the R3E utilizes the 24 multiplier.
just make sure your dimm timings are set correctly, it will be on auto, and your ram i believe should be set to 9-11-9-27 where mine was set to 9-10-9-27
try to keep you're Vcore as low as you can with stable clock, because thats where most of the heat will come from, and with a V6 you want it as low as possible. Try a 4.0ghz with 1.25vcore - 1.275 if those are not solid, then i'd say go no higher than 1.3ghz for 4.0ghz, it shouldn't need to.
The good thing about the R3E is that with about 4.0ghz or so you can keep everything on auto, and just adjust the multiplier/or speed, and you should be able to achieve a nice OC.

Ok, I will try it out tonight. Also I am going to remove my V8 from my current PC and use it on this PC. My current computer is a Core 2 Duo 3.16Ghz overclocked to 3.86Ghz and has been stable for about 3 years. It should be fine with the V6 and it looks like the brackets from the V6 and V8 are interchangeable. Should work out perfectly =) WOOT! Thanks for all your help and research, it will give me a great starting point. I might need some thermal paste, TO THE STORE! Also I will be sitting in front of my door until it arrives, like a kid on Christmas.
Update: Ok I checked up on the V6 GT CPU fan and it seems it will be ok. Look at this review, the conclusion section. http://pcwizkidstechtalk.com/index.php/cm-v6gt.html. So I am going to stick with the V6 GT :)
Ok, noob question here. I see you talking about the Multiplier but I am unable to locate the Multiplier options. Only thing I see if the CPU Ratio Setting (which I assume is the multiplier) and what does the first 3 digit number represent? ie. 200x21. Is it BCLK? Please let me know if there is something I overlooked.
