The base of my U120 was very slightly convex. When I started lapping it, it took a while before the edges would lose the chrome finish to reveal copper. I think they're pretty much all like that though, since most intel CPUs tend to be very slightly concave. I'm not sure if it made any difference in me lapping it though, especially since I didn't lap my CPU. I don't think I'd bother with lapping next time, it's just a huge PITA.
