Default help a noob overclock!

Hi all
this is my first post here, and i hope someone here could help me..
I have an intel core2 quad q9550 on an ASUS P5QC mobo with 4GB of DDR3 1333 RAM .
I want to OC it from stock 2.83Ghz to a moderate 3.4Ghz.
as my multiplier is 8.5, I need to up my FSB from stock 333 to 400. OK.
my qeustions are: FSB northbridge strap set to-what? (currantly on auto) I have several options in BIOS UI: 200, 266, 333, 400. what should I choose?
DRAM frequency (currently AUTO) I have several options in BIOS UI: 667, 800, 835, 887, 1002, 1066, 1111, 1333. should I set it to 1333?
mem OC charger - disable? enable?
Ai clock twister: auto? lighter? light? modarate? strong? stronger?

voltages: I want to leave voltages of CPU, CPU PLL, FSB termination and DRAM on auto. is it OK?

thanx in advance

SB

NEVER!!!! NEVERRRRR leave voltage on auto, especially on cheap asus board. The mobo will push way to much voltage. You can leave most of the other option on auto with no issue on a moderate OC but voltage is all a manual thing. No need to play with the memory for this OC IMO. Just get the FSB up a bit, bump the Vcore step by step if needed, and CPU PLL if needed. Also, can we have complete spec
Here is a little form.

Case:
PSU:
RAM:
GPU:
CPU:
Cooler:

Default help a noob overclock

thanx mate here's my specs:
case: not a fency one, just enough with stock fans.
PSU: 850W (don't remember the brand cause I'm at work right now bit it's a good one, cost me quite a bit)
RAM: kingstone 4GB 1333 DDR3
GPU: GyGabite Ati Radeon HD4870 1GB
CPU: intel core2 quad Q9550
cooler: stock intel fan

are you suggesting leaving the DRAM frequency on AUTO?
also my vcore max is 1.7
CPU PLL voltage is 1.5 min, 2.78 max
FSB termination voltage: 1.20min, 1.90max
DRAM voltage: DDR3 1.5min, 2.78max

and what about mem timings: do i need to change them too, or leave it as it is right now?

I would concider to get a aftermarket cooling like hyper 212. The intel stock fan is not good for OC. You can still try but well...if you have heat issue then you know what to do.

For now leave ram on auto
Vcore : don't exeed 1.4 ( don't jump to it, climb in the setting by trying all the scale your bios already have )
CPU PLL : you shouldn't have to touch it for a light OC
same for the 2 other setting.

Also, leave the timing on what tey are, play with them when you will have more experience.

I have this board, and it hates me.

I had to give the northbridge and the PLL some extra juice (voltage) in order for my overclock to remain stable. I'm not at home so i can't check them out right now, but add a good 0.20V or so to it (recalling from scratchy memory.. and especially with a quad core!) do not leave the ram on auto, set it manually to the closest thing you have to 1333 (or less). disable the charger and set the twister to lighter. FSB strap to 333 (I think you'll need it set at that to get the 1333 mhz ram speed). set the ram's default timings and voltages in the bios too. I never got very far with this board, and that was on DDR2 ram, I never tried it with DDR3. Let us know how far you get. I'll correspond with you and maybe we can toy with settings.

Default noob on the move

OK, so let me get myself in order:
first, set the FSB to 400 (multiplier is 8.5) =3.4Ghz
FSB strap to NB =333 (or auto? or maybe 400?)
dram freq=1333 (or 1111, or auto?)
timings = default
mem charger=disable
twister=lighter
DRAM voltage=auto
CPU voltage = here's when I don't get it. I have to dial it manully and I don't know what voltage to dial first in order to go step by step as MArtin MEtal recomended. do I start at the lowest ?(0.85) or higher?
NB voltage = (auto?)
SB voltage = (auto?)
also - what about the spread spectrum? disable?

thanks again

no, set the timing and voltage manually, as per your ram specifications.

start your CPU voltage off at 1.36 V - that's the high end of intel's spec.

disable spread spectrum.

umm.. NB to 1.45ish, SB to 1.5.

try that.

I'm gonna leave my DRAM timings as they are don't wanna mess with that...
NB strap to 333MHZ
DRAM freq to 1333?
