My System Specs

Default i7 980x, trying for 4.4GHz

Hi guys, I'm trying to OC my i7 980x just for kicks. Below are my settings for a bootable 4.2GHz. I've done a run of Cinebench, but no stability tests yet. For these settings, I have CPU voltage: 1.30V and QPI: 1.21875V. Is QPI the same thing as VTT?

I've tried CPU Voltage = 1.33750V
QPI = 1.31875V
which got me a bootable 4.4GHz. I tried running a Cinebench run for fun, and I noticed that it throttles the CPU frequency down a LOT, like 3.5GHz sometimes. Is this because these frequencies at my given voltages are not stable, so the system throttles down to keep from rebooting?

This is one of the questions I'm most curious about: Is it better to go with low BCLK's and high multipliers, high BCLK's and low multipliers, or a medium amount of both? The screenshot below shows my 4.2GHz OC with 100 BLCK and 42x multiplier. Looks kind of funny lol

man your qpi link is ridiculously lol
why even go 100blk you criplling your system

you dont need high blk with that cpu
but you cuttin off its legs to go that low

So by increasing the BCLK, I not only increase the CPU frequency, but it also increases the QPI Link? If that's the case, then having low BLCK and high multiplier is clearly not a good solution right?

yup the higher the qpi the higher the performance
the higher the blk the higher vtt so ...
keep on testing
4.4 is faily easy n 1.4v is safe dont go over 1.425 vtt the 980x has a good imc so no need for high vtt

My System Specs

Default

I just got mine through a day / night of stability testing @ 4.13 ghz (due to my Voltage requirements its presently my top end on air)....I didn't get a "dream chip"....as my initial low Voltage testing and numerous BSOD's dictated (manage to corrupt my GPU Drivers a couple of times as well as Vantage...hahahahah)....anyhoo...Without vDroop..
130 x 31
Memory 2:12 @ 1600 Mhz 8-8-8-24-88-1T
Uncore x24 3200 Mhz - Tried the 1.5x RAM for Gulftown but endless BSOD's until I brought it back up
QPI Frequency Selection - 6.4 GT/s (really only for Stock 133 - change to 4.6 GT/s for higher QPI)
MCH Strap "Auto"
vCore - 1.3875v - Load 1.4v
vTT - +125mv - Load 1.4v
IOH/CPU PLL vCore - both 1.65v (lowered from Auto 1.8v...follow the trend)
vDimm 1.65v
QPI PLL vCore (Auto) 1.1v (this maybe brought up some, but not quite sure if it should be when only raising Mult)
ICH 1.15v (Sli 480's) - may bump this up a tad
IOH vCore (Auto) 1.1v - may bump this up a tad
All other Voltages Auto

CPU / PWM left at lowest...250 - 800 khz...tried raising this up a bit, for cleaner power, hoping for less Voltage requirements but my Temps on my NB got a little toasty (noticed higher Temps on GPU top slot)..so lowered it...

I'm going to play around a little tomorrow bumping up all 3:
IOH
ICH
IOH/ICH
and check against any performance increase / decrease running Vantage

vCore seems high, but honestly, any less and BSOD....any less + increase in vTT = BSOD....Perhaps its simply the trait of my Chip...

Load Temps (on air)
High 60's into the low/mid 70's on all Cores..Max on 1 Core hit 76C...

Figure thats my Air Cooled 980X limit, unless I figure out some way to get that vCore down......

even playing around with increasing QPI (Bclk) and going with a lower Mult cannot seem to get this Chip stable without higher vCore....bummer....was really hoping for 4.1 Ghz around 1.32v (wound up 1.38v)
I'm going to play around with QPI 160 x 26 Mem 2:10 and see if I can get the Voltage down.....tried it once, but that was before I got to my vTT requirements for my Memory....know now for 12GB @ 1600 w 1T I cannot get stable with less than 1.4v....hhhmmm

Note: LinX max Memory Test does not stress these Hexa Core Chips like it does Quad Core...stable with LinX 25x doesn't mean too much as far as Solid stable goes....I consistently found LinX stable settings bombing running P95 Blend....whereby a P95 Blend would consistently get through LinX Max Mem, you'll notice the lower Core temps running LinX as well, thats a signal right their.....(fvck, i'll be dreaming about 00000000x101 for the next week)....for testing solid stable I recomend:
1. linX 10 passes for "quick n nasty" then
2. P95 Small FFT's - min 8 hrs
3. P95 Blend - min 8-12 hrs

I had a number of 101's at 5-6 hrs ;( ....real drag!!!

Anyhow...to the OP......they really are a fun chip to play with ....enjoy!

Cheers
