Default Safe Temps? (i7 930)

Hey guys,

Just finished putting together this build yesterday, and decided i'd try overclocking for my first time. Read a few articles, and gave it a whirl. Seems to be doing okay thus far at 3.960, prime95 has been running for about 25 minutes but i'll be keeping it on for a few hours.

My temps are making me abit nervous though.

SpeedFan says theyre at 80c, which is iffy to me - i've used speed fan in the past and like it a lot.

...but I also downloaded "Real Temp", which i've never used before - and it's telling me the temps are between 89 and 95!

I'm not sure which one to believe. Also, is 80c to high?

I'm using a thermaltake 212 Plus CPU cooler. I have intentions of putting together a watercooling configuration in a few weeks though, but I need some more money and need to do a little more research before I start that!

80C is not too high, and Real Temp is giving you the correct numbers. The limit for your CPU is technically 100C. However, that limit only means that the CPU will start to throttle itself. The actual maximum safe temperature is above that, and the CPU will shut down before there is any risk of damage so it's really not something you need to worry about.

Thermaltake 212 Plus? There's no such thing. Do you mean Coolermaster? Anyway, your temps do look high, especially for the voltage you're using. I recommend you remount your heatsink while following this method to apply thermal paste: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=5

Well shoot, I got the store to mount my CPU/FAN for me, because thats one thing in PC building i've never done, and am somewhat iffy on doing - seems like a pretty hard thing to do and not mess it up. Guess the store didnt do it correct, great.

If I get watercooling in a few weeks, will I be okay to leave my cpu alone til then?

I wasn't happy with my temps when overclocking my I7. I went from Hyper 212+ to Megahalem to watercooled. I cannot remember the 212 temps but I believe I was at 80C+- with two fans on the 212, somewhere in the mid 70's with the Megahalem, and now at 60C with watercooling. (all temps loaded)

RealTemp tell you the truth and 95C in daily use is a little bit too much for my taste but you can survive until you go watercooled. :)

I would consider gong back to stock clocks until you can try reseating your heatsink or putting it under water.

Fair enough, I may do that. Keep in mind those temps were from torture testing in prime95 - I'm unraring a 16gb file right now and my realttemps aren't even pushing past 60, which I think would be the most "stress" I would put my PC under except for gaming - I think i'll just keep an eye on my temps while gaming/doing stressful things until I go water cooled.
