Default lapped e6600

So I decided to see if this was worth all the fuss and haven't really notice much improvement in all honesty.

My e6600 is overclocked to 3.4ghz @ 1.47v and idle its around 47 degrees with the Tuniq and under load hits around 60 degrees. Hard to say if its anything else causing some problems like possibly my Tuniq fan needs to be replaced but anyways heres the pics.

Just as a side note there was some spots around the outside edge I couldn't get and since I didn't know how far down I could go I didn't want to rish the chance of cracking or destroying the cpu so I left it.

Start

Getting there

OOOOH pretty copper

Almost there!

Finished!

Lee Valley has some good lapping accessories for that smooth polish -considering ordering some myself for messing around with - also good for flattening my waterstones and planer heads

Wasn't going for polished just lapped :) And even with a fan spinning at 2000rpm the temps aren't any better than if I hadn't of done it.

So I'm probably gonna drop the tuniq and upgrade to the ultra 120 and see what happens.

Did you try lapping the tuniq? Could be the surface of its base was the original weak link.

Tuniq has a pretty flat base already but between the heatpipes and the base theres probably 1/8" of material but either way I am around 60 degrees underload which is good.

I'm just curious how much difference the Ultra120 would make.

hmmm might do it for my E2140 and AC freezer 7 pro... i do have a bit of experience in sanding too... I'll do it if I'll need better temps. Some say if you do it right you can drop your temps 5C's. also I'm wondering, when you've finished lapping them, do you really need to put some thermal conpound at all or less or same since the contact between the HSF/CPU is way better?

Yes you do still need TIM, the TIM fills the tiny, tiny imperfections in the surfacearea, lapping smooths the surface making it far easier for your TIM to do it's job.
