Default Problem overclocking my E8400

I hit 3.6Ghz but for some reason CPU-Z fluctuates between 2.400 and 3.6...I have no clue why.

its called EIST. google it Basically, your cpu is dropping down multipliers when idling or with light use. Try stressing the cpu and check it again.

Perhaps one of the crazy OC'ers (*cough*3oh6*cough*) can check me on this, but I've never really turned it off unless I was going for a very high OC. Aka, I had it on w/ my E8400 @ 4Ghz, but turned it off to push past 4.5Ghz.

you should fill out the system specs in your control panel for the forums, that way people can see what your working with. it'll be easier for the guru's to give you OC'ing advice. :)

Well don't take my word for it, but it depends on the game and resolution you play at. That being said, an e8400 @ 3.5-4Ghz with a 5870 should be just fine for whatever you throw at it in most cases.

Edit:
Oh yeah, EIST can be turned off from the Bios.
