Default ASUS P5Q-E + E8400 E0 - first time OC

Hi Everyone,

Well I actually built my PC last year but have never got around to over clocking it. I have never OC'd anything so I have spent quite a while just researching and reading some of the posts here. I know there are a bunch of guides online for e8400's but I had a few specific questions so I thought i would make a post specific to my build. This is what I currently have.

ASUS P5Q-E (latest bios)
Intel e8400 3.0 E0
gmatek's Dark Knight S1283 HS
Mushkin RL 2x2GB DDR2 PC2-8000 5-5-5-12
GTX 260
Corsair HX620

Running just at 3.0ghz It sits idle at around 29 to 30 degrees. So reading some other threads on here I thought I would just take it easy and try to go 3.6. In the BIOS I made the following changes:

- set AI OC tuner: manual
- FSB - 400
-CPU ratio setting: 9.0
-CPU Voltage - 1.3
-DRAM Volatage - 1.9

So now I've booted up now and everything seems ok. If i bring up Core Temp it is now sitting at 31-32 degrees at idle.

One question i have is under the Frequency section it keeps flipping back sometimes between 3.0 x 6 and 3.6 x 9, is that normal? or is it just supposed to stay at 3.6 x 9 all the time?

This is the part i'm a little confused on now, so to make sure it is stable i should run Prime95 for 8hrs or so and see if it passes everything?

I've have it running right now for about an hour and it sits around 45-48 degrees. Is there any other tests i should run? Is there a specific test i should be using on Prime95? Sorry for all the questions just a little nervous about messing anything up

Also I'm not sure if i should be making an memory specific changes?

Yep, that's called EIST/C1E. It's a feature not a bug.
Run prime95 Small FFTs (for heating CPU mostly) or Blend (to test the memory too) and monitor your core temps with latest RealTemp. Also if you're brave run 5 passes of LinX with All memory selected.

Sorry to hijack but I have a similar setup with Asus P5Q and a E8400 C0.

Trying to get past the 3.6ghz barrier [ran stable with 20 passes of linx with all memory selected ]
But LinX keeps failing at like the 3rd pass =( . How should I continue to tweak the settings to see what's causing the error stop?

OK quick update, I ran prime64 all night so around 8hrs and it seems fine, all tests passed. It ran between 48 - 50 degree's the entire time.

Just ran LinX with all memory selected and 5 passes. Finished without error in 17m with the temps being around 57-60 degrees.

So this is all good? Is there some more testing I should do? what would my next steps be

Hey bedouin, so I'm assuming you hit 3.6 stable now correct?

Now you're where I am, getting past this 3.6 though your lucky, you have the E0 :(

I'm trying to hit 3.8 at the moment with no luck.

I'm not a clocker but for me 8 hours of prime95 and a quick 5 passes of LinX are more than enough for stability. :)
Your temps looks perfect fine so ask for more.
