Reasonable OC for E6750?

Specs: C2D E6750 (2.66GHz, 1333FSB), Artic Freezer Pro 7
Asus P5K-E WiFi
2x1G OCZ XTC Platinum, DDR2 800, 4,4,4,15
BFG 8600GT OC
3x Hitachi Deskstar 250G HD in RAID 0/5
Antec Sonata III, 500W P/S

Currently, I have it running at 8x343 (around 2.75 GHz), vcore of 1.27. Prime 95 is stable. Temps CPU 33, MOBO 35.

I am aiming for a moderate OC (not out for the record of 4+ GHz :) ) that can be run 24/7 with some degree of safety & hardware longevity. I am thinking maybe 8x400 or 3.2 GHz. With 1:1 Ram timing, I won't have to run the RAM out of spec.

You think this is a reasonable OC to aim for? Or am I playing with fire & should aim lower before I pre-maturely kill something ....

I'd be choked if it didn't do that standing on it's head...... :)

I doubt you'll have too many problems getting that provided the board can give you 400 stable.

Just take it slow, do a lot of incremental stability tests to make sure that you don't end up needing a ton of VCore to get it stable and watch your temps.

No problem getting to 3.2 GHz at all. Prime95 stable for 6+hr so far, with vcore 1.34, & core temp around 50. <Asus Q-fan is still running the CPU fan on medium, so I guess all is well on the temp front.>

However, I am noticing that the computer appears to be slower running at 3.2 GHz! When I was running at 3.0 GHz, I can have Prime95 running at 100% CPU load (both cores) & still open windows & do stuff with some degree of snappiness. Running at 3.2 GHz, I am noticing a 1 second or 2 delay doing the same things. In fact, while Prime was running, windows decided to update, at the same time my antivirus decided to run a scan. This slowed things down so much that I thought the computer frozed.

I am wondering if this is my immagination, or is there a trade off - ie running a faster FSB might speed up single thread work but slow down multi-thread processes? Perhaps I should run the machine at 3.0 vs 3.2 for a few days each & see if there is a real world difference...

Any thoughts or advice?

I found that OC's where the Vcore was right on the edge would behave as you have described, even to the point where shutting down ORTHOS was quite difficult. The machines would check out orthos stable, but didn't want to do multitasking with orthos running.

You could try bumping vcore up one notch to see if that improves things at all.

Thanks for the tip. I was letting vcore run on AUTO, and there must be some lag in the volts when the CPU steps up. At any rate, things are much better with the vcore set to 1.35.

I am amazed at the ease at OC'ing the E6750. With the stock vcore of 1.35, I am running the CPU at 8x425 = 3.4 GHz (better than my goal), without any fancy tweaks, totally stable, and temp at 50C with the CPU fan running at half speed.

For fun, I tried 8x435 at stock volts. Booted up no problems, but crashed on heavy load. With the temp I am getting, I would expect to be able to push this much higher by upping the vcore ... etc. However, I am pretty happy running 3.4 GHz on stock volts for now.

I got the same results with my E6750. Pushed it to 3.3 without a hitch. Anything less than 3.2 and I would have been disappointed! I'm sure it can go more than this. What are you using to cool it?

Nothing fancy ... CPU cooler - Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 7
Stock chassis fan (Antec tricool) running on medium

Ran Prime 95 at 3.4 GHz for 24 hrs, & core temp reads around 48-50C (Asus reads CPU temp in low 40's, case temp 38 or so).

ive got my 6750 running @ 3.70 on stock voltages, rock solid and the CPU temp is 21 idle about 31 under heavy load. i havent tried pushing it any further, im lazy and things are really fast.

i figure the tricky part is not keeping the cpu cool, its all about cooling the northbridge.

Hey guys, I need some help figuring out whats going wrong here. I am having some real heat issues with my first oc. Right now I'm running a e6750 with an arcitc cooling freezer pro 7, asus p5b-e, 4 gigs ocz platinum 4-4-4-15, and an 8800 gts. I currently have my e6750 oc'ed to 8x400 for a total of 3.2 GHz and 1 to 1 ratio with ram. I figured that would be a good first oc, however at these settings I idle in the upper 40's and when I run Orthos prime 2004 I end up just stopping the test within a minute because the temps get up to upper 60's (I've seen 68, but then killed the test). I notice my Vcore is 1.56, but I never changed it, but is that too high? is that the problem? Well I'm really hoping for some responses cus this has been really bugging me. thanks

1.56 is certainly not stock. It should be either 1.25 or 1.35.

It could be a software monitor issue, or it could be a motherboard issue.

Check bios and see what it's set to (go back to stock speeds and set to 1.35 in bios to see what readings you get with the monitor software).
