Default Athlon II x4 620 + GA-MA785GMT-UD2H + ?
Well, the new budget build is up and running.
Would have taken pics, but my camera is 'in the shop'.
Sure wish I could have gotten more, but the budget was only $400 - $500.
I'd say I did pretty good with what I had... and the gf is really happy...

AMD Athlon II X4 620
Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H
Crucial Ballistix 2x2GB DDR3-1333
WD Caviar Black 500GB
Corsair CMPSU400W
LG 22x DVDRW
CM Elite 330

Using onboard Radeon 4200 for now.
Hoping to get a good deal on a gts250 or something.

Would like to OC the CPU a little and need some tips.
Only have stock HSF atm so I don't want to push it too far.
Looking into getting a CM Hyper 212 or something soon...

Cool man, let us know how far you can clock that CPU, well as far as you can with stock cooling I guess. I dunno what kinda of tips you need but if you got any questions just ask and someone will help.

Well I have never owned an AMD system so really don't know where to start.

Ive built 3 HTPC systems this week with that same combo. For that purpose you cant find a better system for the dollar. My customers are tickled pink with thier new media center machines that were so cheap for the,

Is there noone here OCing an AMD who can point me in the right direction?
From what I've gathered so far, I should be able to run around 3GHz on stock cooling.
This build darn near broke me so I just can't afford better cooling right now.
Max temp for the chip looks to be around 71c... at stock it gets 55c - 58c during Prime95 (according to Coretemp and AMD Overdrive).
Everest shows motherboard temp getting in the mid 60's, which I assume is because of the onboard graphics (but I don't know).

Should I bother wiping the thermal tape off the HSF and putting some MX-2 or something on it?
I've got some of that, and an unopened tube of the stuff that came with my TRUE.
Just left the tape on because I didn't have any alcohol to clean it properly.

mx2 should be better then the tape. i can't help you overclock though because i have not overclocked any amd chips in a while sorry

Anyone with info/tips/links please post here and help me out.
If not... I guess I'll update this thread with whatever progress I can make.

It's not my computer (built it for my girlfriend) so I don't want to kill it yet... just make it sweat a little.
Hoping to be able to convince her to fold on it, but not sure about that.
If that happens I'll really want to get a half-decent OC going.
For now, I just want to push it a little... maybe 3 - 3.2GHz.

perhaps your case needs better airflow?
I noticed when I added some intake fans to my old system and upgraded the exhaust I had better temps.
