Sounds like the thermal paste dried and is not conducting heat efficiently, i'd go for a remount.

Which one did you use btw ?

How long did the beep continue? Almost sounds like a power supply issue.

It was a steady beep that continued until I restared- funny that you say power supply because the ol' ocz has been sounding a little odd sometimes lately- I have been worrying that there was a problem, but until today I thought maybe it was just a little cat hair or something in there. I took the vacuum to it the other day just to suck out anything that might be in there.

Have you been able to bump it up to the same settings without any problems?

I'd also suggest re-applying the tim, and then run it through some stress testing while monitoring the temps.

If the temps are still up there, I'd see if I could get my hands on another PSU to see if the temps dropped down with it.

Holy Crap!! Earlier tonight it froze up again (but w/o the beep noise) and I don't think it was temps because at 3.2 it never went above 43 degrees with what I've been doing with it today. But I just started to write this thread and thought I'd check my temps again and POOF! It's idling at 32 degrees!! I've never seen it nearly that low!!! I don't know what the hell is going on..

BTW- coretemp is reading the same- It really looks like the power going to the cpu must be fluctuating-- could it be voltage regulators?? I have heard that with these boards- the heatsink on them can pull away from the center regs as the board begins to flex under the weight of the cpu heatsink- could this be it?

Is this a new board?

I'd definately try with a different PSU if you can get your hands on one.

Well, I'd have to buy one because I don't have anything stronger than a 300w here-- do you think it would be worth picking up another? I don't suppose ocz cross ships their RMA's.......

The board is an evga 680i - i bought it just before x-mas but I will be receiving the revision soon.

OCZ might actually cross ship their PSUs if you know for sure that it's the PSU that's the problem.

Does speedfan work with your mobo? Can you get the (software isn't the best) PSU voltages from it?
