Beginner's Luck ?

I have never overclocked before, was curious and wanted to try it.
Q8200 on ASUS P5Q PRO TURBO. RAM is 800 MHZ. All voltages standard except Core voltage at 1.25 V. It is running stable at 3.15 GHZ (450MHZ x 7).

Is it just dumb luck?

Depends how you define "stable"...

If you've ran LinX or OCCT or Prime95 for at least 6h without errors, then I'll agree that it's stable. And if that's the case, good job indeed.

no need for 6 hours of prime especially linX
1 hour is plenty
all you will do is stress the system like no other program will
you can prime for 24 hours and still have a system crash while gaming
prime for 1 hour then game n see

^...yep....if you were simply able to Post and get to Desktop / open CPU-Z then you have a fair bit of testing ahead of you.....

Thast maybe your Methodology but I can guarentee many experienced OC'ers here will most certainly run "testing" to a greater degree than 1 hr P95 and gaming...many here have various methods, personally I test the CPU and RAM extensively...generally if I pass..I will not CTD when gaming...haven't had one of those at all in well over 4 - 5 months since my testing.

LinX Max Memory 64 Bit - 25 passes
P95 8 hrs (usually just let her go overnight) Small FFT
I tend not to go with the P95 Blend Test as I find that all of my available Memory is being "tested" heavy in Linx

You're fooling yourself if you think thier is a "quick" way to check stability with an OC......a good start is LinX 10 passes..then increase OC and testing from thier, but you ultimately have to go for the long tests to really know whether it is stable.
If yuor getting CTD / BSODF while gaming AFTER 24 HRS p95...I would ask what P95 dtest did you run....likley a Memory fault caused your crash if you only tested CPU.

Very nice overclock. Only thing that sucks is the low multiplier. What's your temperatures?

Anyways, here's my definition of stability.

4 to 5 hours of OCCT
30 passes of Memtest test #5 and 2 passes of overall Memtest
Can run Folding@Home without crashes

That's pretty much what I do too. I usually do Memtest first. And if it passes then I'm off to the races !
