Default XP... slower?? than vista??
hey, just wanted to post a stunning observation:

EDIT: this is in 3dmark06, sorry

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Vista 32bit w/4890
-----------------------------------------------------------------

first run = 15.3k

oc'ed gpu run = 15.5k

Oc'ed cpu run = 17.1k

oc'ed cpu+gpu run = 18.4k

------------------------------------------------------------------
XP w/4890 ===>something is up
------------------------------------------------------------------

first run = 14.9k

oc'ed gpu run = 15.3k

oc'd cpu run = 16.9k

oc'ed cpu+gpu run = 17.6k


These were all taken with the same Overclocks (955 core/1125 mem), (3.876 ghz)
The only things being different is the OS. Same Driver version (catalyst 9.6)

Stunning.

The numbers are bigger but what benchmark are you using?

My only guess would be that the latest ATI driver is optimized more for the DX10 platform than the DX9 one (xp).

The last benchmark is really scary, almost 1k difference between the two, in Vista's favor.

Could this mean the end of the Anti-Vista Fanbois?

Vista is still a sluggish OS that needs far too many tweaks before it becomes "decent" enough to use. Use Windows 7 I'd say.

Yeah, I'm researching where to buy the $65 Pre-order version..

Is Win7 really THAT good? oh and if I was to download an RC... today... should I pick 32 or 64 bit? Mind you, 32 bit will do just fine, but 64-bit is "better" for some people, plus I'm not keen on buying more ram to feed it ...

No need to go 64 bit ever unless A) You have 4 Gigs of ram or more and need to use all of it for multiple applications (since few programs can even access more than 2Gb of RAM at a time anyway) or B) You have a 64-bit program that you'd like to run on a 64-bit OS for best performance.

I find Win7 to be as fast as Xp, polished, very well thought out and not a single issue thus far using the RC (But i've been testing since the first MSDN betas). Beats Vista hands down if you ask me.

Lemme know what you can get on that preorder, the MS website link is for the US only...

The thing is... I LIKE XP lol,

especially when I've loaded royale noir remixed theme. Its really sexy. The OS itself is also very responsive and "snappy", although I feel it does not take advantage of quad-core cpu's very well.

I'm sure if you installed Windows 95 on a modern machine it would feel very "snappy" and responsive as well.
