w3520 overclocking advice? - XtremeSystems Forums

Nehalem 101 part1 - 1366 and X58 - XtremeSystems Forums

Check this thread out it had some good information on what many people have found overclocking a i7, also what stepping is the i7 you have from what im ready from you posts, it looks like a D0?

Vid isnt found in coretemp yet... best way to find you max vid is boot you system up with the system voltage on auto asus in perticular will find the factory set VID for that packaging date.

from what I read and the conclusion im getting from XS is that C1/C0 stepping i7 have an issue running with HT enabled, and getting a stable OC, D0 steppers are improved and can do 4.3 and much lower voltages. The fact that Ht doesnt effect anything with you temps is very strang and I would look into that because everyone has the a temp increase of atleast 10c while using it. Make sure turbo mode is set to off inless you know how to adjust it, and open task manager and make sure there is 8 cores runnign in windows, another thing is run your cpu abit under prime95 and OCCT stress Large FFT test to see if that cpu is truely stable.

I have tryed and OCCT or Prime95 tests with HT off ill keep you updated on my finding. 4.2 @1.58v ht on seems to be OCCT stable for me atm. but the temps are huge at fully load.

Those were some excellent links. Thanks!

And as for my specific specs, there's not much to add to what I said in my first post. Uncore multiplier is at twice the memory multiplier, giving me ~3200mhz (8 x 2 = 16, then 16 x 200 = 3200). DRAM frequency at 1600 mhz. I really think that's about it. <_< Everything else is auto.

I've realized after a while that 4.0ghz is definitely enough for me at the moment. I'll save these guides for later when I hunger for more clocks. As for now, my CPU is ripping through every game I throw at it. Pretty satisfied.

Langiroth is the CPU prime or OCCT stable, pick LinX and see how many Large line packs you can get before it fails.

I ending up having to bring the core speed down, I took the last owner advice and he had said he had gotten stable oc's at 4ghz and 4.3ghz we'll that was obviously un-true. So the cpu's max stable frequency is 3.8ghz @ 1.32v pushing it any farther seem to bring instiblility and hit temps and voltages, so 3.8 I thing is my max speed for this cpu.

I got it LinX stable and now its been running under OCCT for 10+ hours ill post the rest of my screens from occt 24hrs soon.

sorry to hear that mate that sucks 3.8 seems to be the sweet spot for the c0c1 step.that and i don't think performance is that different. I see a d0 in your future then if the goal is the 4.0ghz mark?

Yes, my overclock is Prime stable (small FFT, 8 hours) and also survived 15 passes of Intel Burn Test (maybe should've tried more?). I've run OCCT for an hour just to see temperatures, not for an actual stress test, perhaps I should give that a run later too. In any case, even with IBT, temps haven't gone above 72 on the hottest core and 68 on the coolest core. I think I might even be able to get by with even lower voltage, but I'll worry about that some time later.
