Default Can I install faster mem than PC6400?

I read somewhere that I should use 800 MHz memory max on my mobo! Is it true? What will be the limitation?

Thank you

AFAIK there is no limitation to what ddr2 mem you can run.

Even a board that only recognises as high as DDR2 667 can run higher mem and make use of its higher speeds through overclocking. (Makes it a lot easier to stay 1-1).

So my next step to stay 1-1 will be to have 800 MHz DDR2 with FSB = 400MHz: I tried but it is not stable around FSB=380 MHz...this is why I am looking for PC8500 memory with a 350 to 375 MHz FSB!

Mixing unmatched mem of the same speed can be a PITA, trying to mix two different speeds on the same board is just asking for trouble... :)

PC8500 would be great to have, but low latency PC6400 seems to be the best bangforbuck at the moment. (Picking up some 4-4-3-8 supertalent tomorrow.... :) ).

It's up to the individual, but I'm not too hung up on getting the mem screaming. I see higher binned mem as an OC tool for my CPU which gives me more options for fsb/multipliers.

Don't mix RAM speeds... If you do, they might not even run. If they DO run, they'll both run at the slower RAM's frequency... so your expensive RAM is being held back.

It was just by curiosity! I will get the PC8500 in few weeks but will have 2 sticks left of PC5400 and I was wondering what I could do with it, I guess I might find a computer to up-grade or put it on sale...

I will try a 1066 MHz memory and slowly increase the FSB to see what I can get!

Cheers!
