As your RAM, were you to upgrade :p

And yes, core0 generally does complete workunits faster for many other reasons, the simplest being that windows processes are handled via Core1, as Core0 is pegged at 100% with a process of equal priority. There are also other reasons too, such preferential treatment of Core0 accessing the NB and RAM, but those effects are very tiny anyways.

Orthos works like FAH, it'll do whatever it can with the processor time it's given... Windows, however, sees that core0 is pegged at 100%, and defaults to running processes on core1 whenever it can manage.
That was the first choice when this system was first designed , but because of budget restraints something had to be cut, and at the time this was configured that ram was just a little higher in price, unfortunately methinks the wrong component was chosen. Just going to have to live with the decision made and make the best out of what's there.

How much longer should Orthos run before the tweeking of the memory is started? Should that be done with Memtest in dos and for how many passes to deem stable.

Bear with me... this is my first attempt at overclocking, and still learning new things all the time from surfing the net

What I would do is keep tweaking until windows doesn't boot properly, or 3dmark crashes, then scale things back a bit or add a little voltage (provided your temps are good)- when you think you've reached the best you can,- That's when you do all the serious testing- don't bother until you're where you think you're where you want to be.

I think memory stability is more imprtant than CPU stability, so don't worry too much about Orthos until you think you've got everything where you want it.

Couldn't agree more here. Conroes will boot well past their absolute stability point and remain stable enough to do most things... including game. However, RAM can go from rock solid to erroring in seconds... within a few mhz.

Most, if not all, DDR2-667 RAM will be able to hit 400mhz FSB 1:1 (DDR2-800 speeds) @ 2.2v with 5-5-5-15-2T timings.

You DO have a p5n-e SLI motherboard, which DOES allow unlinked mode. Make sure to use it ;)

Didn't know that about the ram being so picky. Should have bought the OCZ. Hummm... maybe the other half will let me get that for Christmas.

Setting the unlinked mode was one of the first things that happened.

Actually started the OC with 3Ghz base and memory at 1:1, unlinked of course. As the cpu OC went higher, tried to keep the memory at 1:1 and that's when all the instability happened. This is the first time that Orthos has gone past 5 hrs.

So now that the core is not as critical as the ram. There's tweeking to be done. Should this be done with Memtest to see how far the memory will be pushed, then work that into the OC?, or is there another method that works better.

Yeah, memtest or Orthos on a Custom workunit size that's massive (over 30mb) works to Stress the RAM pretty well.

5-5-5-15 @ 2.3v should easily hit DDR2-800 speeds.

According to manufacture specs, this ram is rated for 1.9v. Is running the ram at 2.3v on a daily basis going to hurt it.

There's generally a stock voltage, and a maximum voltage- maybe see if you can find their max voltage (it may be 1.9, but I would guess it's a little higher)

Yes the voltage does go higher.. 2.1v is the recommended max.

Is applying another .2v really gonna hurt this memory? Probably not, so it's out of the frying pan and into the fire. LOL!!

Personally, If the rated max is 2.1, I wouldn't give it more than that unless I had an aftermarket memory cooler installed- I just installed one on mine today- I got the CoolIt RAMFan- I don't recommend it because it is only a two pin fan so fan speed can't be slowed down and it's VERY noisy- go with OCZ or Corsair as they're about the same price and have three pin fans that are also quieter.
