What are the benefits of doing firmware updates? Do they ever add support for new anti-piracy protections etc?

well, firmwares in my experience can help fix media incompatibilities or improve writes to certain media codes or add support for overburning, etc...

don't do it unless you want the additional features, just like a BIOS -- if it ain't broke (and you don't need the extra functionality) leave it alone...
