time for me to update too ... just dawned on me how much easier it would be to connect one into my caseless folding farm rigs when i need one for installing os'es, drivers etc. vs the ungainly ide cable.

Other than my main rig, i just plug one in when i need it.

Yep, just took the plunge myself and picked up the 18X Samsung Lightscribe model.

Shows up as a DVD-RAM drive but everything seems to work well.

Bundled software is Nero7 se and it works fine burning the lightscribe images. (My old nero 6 supposedly supported lightscribe but I could never get it to work with an HP lightscribe model). Seems relatively quiet as well.

Default pioneer sata dvr212

picked one of those up from greenlymph in halifax a few months ago..didnt get any software with it though. Very quiet drive and looks tidy without the IDE cables to HD drive as well. Havent worked out if the drives working at SATA2 speeds though yet.

SATA DVD drives are IDE with built in SATA interfaces. THey are no faster than normal IDE, they just have the a SATA adapter built into them. I do love my LG SATA DVD burner, mostly because I have PATA cables. It will be nice when they actually speed these things up enough to take advantage of the extra bandwidth though.

I was close to buying a serial ATA DVD writer over the weekend. In theory, there's no justified advantage in using one, but in practice they are easier to manage without that fat 5cm wide ribbon floating around in your case. Besides, the price premium was only 5 dollars, and you usually only buy one or two optical drives at a time...

don't see how it's lame. SATA is a connection type not a harddrive exclusive standard. I say it's about time they get more mainstream (saw them on NCIX like last year).

No more screwin' around with master/slave crap for anything. That's a big plus if you ask me.

I'm runnin' pre-rounded cables that are pretty much standard with new mobo's now. They still are a bit bulky and a pain to run (they bulk up if bent).

I got a Pioneer DVR-212D in Black. Only 18x though. Seems to work fine, no issues with it so far. Haven't done much with it though.

Nice clean bezel on it, pure black. No ugly white writing and such. The writing is "engraved" into the plastic.

Ah just what I was wondering.

So if its still ide internally then no point changing...no performance increase

I'll just use mine till they go poof.
