Default Make backup iso of 8.1 SSD OS

I want to make a backup iso of my current 8.1 os on my ssd and store it on my other HDD before checking out Windows 10. What is everybody using these days to complete this sort of task?

I took the plunge and finally bought a copy of acronis TI and DD when it was on sale earlier this year. Just finished doing 5 images today for just this reason. :)

I'm too cheap to use Acronis (although I used to not be), so I used the "System Image Backup" thingie at the bottom-left corner of the File History dialog.
Essentially this: Back up your programs, system settings, and files - Windows Help
For Windows 8.1, substitute "Backup and Restore" for "File History" compared to the video.

Disadvantages compared to Acronis would be the following:
  • You need Windows 8.1 install media to recover the image again (recovery disk may work but I never tried it)
  • If you changed the partitioning scheme of the drive, you'll have to erase all the partitions on the drive to be able to restore again
  • No compression
  • One image per computer per backup media (e.g. you can have images from 2 different computers on the same HDD, but not 2 different images from the same computer)

I used Paragon in the spring to do an image of my young lad's laptop before shipping him off to points west. He's already done two full restores without any problems (not sure how many times I've got to tell him that PS3 game hacks online are damn near guaranteed to be hosting malware/virus'.

Win 8.1 really buries the 'create a system image' option that used to be readily found in 7. Once you do find it, it's worked just fine for me a couple times. Obviously you'll need a spare drive of some sort to put it on but it's done just fine for me.

I've used another one, Easebackup or something like that. Had mixed results. I used to do a backup of each just to be on the safe side but it's been a while. Reminds me that I'm probably overdue to backup....

Easeus Todo Backup free - I use this for migrating people from large HDD to small SSD as it allows you to resize partitions.

I used the built in Win 8.1 "Create a system image" option in file history before upgrading all my machines to W10. Point it to a network folder (\\localhost\drive$\Foldername) if you want multiple backups or want to keep a history. You'll need the 8.1 install media to recover (recovery disk didnt work for me but 8.1 media did when i was testing the technical preview and needed to restore).

I used to use Acronis but the latest version have all sorts of issues detecting my laptop hardware (esp networks and usb drives) when booting from a usb drive.
