Windows 7 is the next version of windows. Originally the plan was for it to be released quite some time in the future, but rumour has it that the folks in the back rooms of Microsoft are working day and night to get it out so that they can put the poor adoption rate of Vista behind them (maybe by Q4 2009).

It's due out in a couple years, MS plans to stick to about 3 year releases schedules, rather than the 5 year delay between XP and Vista.

Vista isn't garbage, it's the best Windows OS currently available, giving Mac OS 10.5 and modern linux distros a run for their money.

Windows doesn't generally gost $500, Vista Home Premium OEM is available for $100, Windows 7 should be pretty much the same price, particularly after being adjusted for inflation.

The release date for Windows 7 has always been late 2009/2010, depending on readiness. This isn't because of the quality or adoption rate of Vista, simply because MS wants to get back to their regular release schedule. XP to Vista had a 5 year delay, prior to this, dating back to 1985, the longest delays were 3.5 years for Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 (NT line), and 3 years for Windows 95 to 98 (non-NT line). If Windows 7 comes out in late 2009 to mid-2010, that will be about equal in time to those releases.

IIRC full retail of Vista Ultimate was over $500 when it launched. I have no idea what it is now. And yes you are very safe with Vista for years to come. Even XP is going to be officially supported a few more years.

I think a 3-year release is crap ... While I agree it probably shouldn't be 5.5 years like XP, I'd prefer something in the 4-year release area. The first 6-12 months after release have always been rough w/ Windows (Vista was probably the worst first 6 months in a long time) and, after the initial issues are ironed out, it's usually a good OS (i.e. Vista post-fall 2007 is pretty good). 2 years of good experience w/ an OS is too short, IMO.

I really don't have any faith in Windows 7 being released before the end of 2009. I'd guess 2010 at the earliest, probably late-2010. You figure Microsoft is going to want to do public beta and release candidate testing for at least a year and, with milestone's 2 and 3 not completed yet, I'd say it's still a way's off.

People who think Vista is all that and a cup of tea are obviously people who don't care much about the OS and just use their computer email and internet.

People who actually use their computers and are productive with them realize how much of a piece of crap Vista is and hence why the adoption to it is so bad for. People want flexibility and ease of use with their computers and people who have been using computers for 15+ years don't feel that with Vista.

So to answer the OP .. yes your copy of Vista will be junk in a few years.. just like Windows ME..

Enjoy buying into the hype :)

After it is released 2 years later than they say because they are inept then we will hear all the same complaints about the next version of windows just like when XP was release and just like Vista now.........

I've heard release dates of 09,10 and 11, and no beta that I know of yet.

Heh... yah never know.... I had a guy bring me a computer to look at last year which still had Millenium installed on it..... :)

All in good fun though folks. I don't see anything patently wrong with Vista these days (other than the DRM which hasn't been activated yet), I just don't see any reason why I'd want it over XP.
