My System Specs

Default Virtual memory only 1024mb but windows is using more?

So I have my virtual memory (pagefile) set to 1024-1024 in Windows system properties.

I have 16GB of ram. Commit charge is reported as 16GB in Windows Task Manager (I assume it's rounded down hence why it does not show as 17GB).

Anyway, I played Thief, and while using MSI Afterburner I noticed the ram usage was ~6000MB, yet the Pagefile was over 9000MB.

I have opened Windows Task Manager to confirm and indeed, RAM usage was reported as ~5.80GB, which is roughly ~6000MB, and the Commit charge was 8GB, so that's at least 2GB more (again probably Commit charge is shown only as 8GB due to rounding down, probably it was close to 9000MB as reported by MSI AB)

So any ideas what is going on? Just curious. I don't think the excess of pagefile is putting any more wear on my SSD. Also the hidden pagefile file on C:/ does stay as 1GB size.

With 16GB of ram, do you really need a pagefile? I've had mine disabled completely for a couple of years without even a warning.

Russinovich explains it pretty well.

In short:
You can't disable virtual memory in Windows.
Page file and virtual memory aren't the same thing, some programs label them improperly.
Windows is pretty good at managing both virtual memory and the page file.
