I've noticed with any OEM OS that the restore option has something to do with it for it's broken (no hidden partition) but still get updates

In the past, I've had MB bios updates being seen as a hardware change. Pretty sure that goes all the way back to win 98, but maybe they've gone that silly again.

I'm going to put my tin foil hat on again and wonder if the same behavior is occurring with win8 installations or if this is something they've done specifically to win7 in order to drive win8 sales........

There is a couple things I would do. Firstly I would look around for token managers. Advanced Token Manager may or may not work on 8.1 (it works on phone only). etc etc
I would also read up on manually backing up tokens. Something like How to manually backup and restore Windows 8.1 RTM activation

Depending on 'my' pov on non-legit activators I may look into KMS type 'things'. In no way am I supporting piracy...but THAT is pure BS and you have paid for the damn thing. You should be able to use it without having to do 'mother may I' every time the OS has a snit.

Thanks for the link AkG. I can't believe MS even after updating to .1 has this issue.

It has come to my attention that installing certain hardware drivers will break the activation on Windows 8 forcing you to reactivate.

I'm pretty sure mom hit the restore button trying to figure it out on her own before calling me. Damn. My issue seems to be a bit different though. It says I've used too many activations. When I have only activated it once.

I hope MS gets swamped by callers and pays dearly for this.

Sorry, forgot to update this. Figured out the USB adapter wasn't her issue. It was her modem. So I put her adapter back in et voila! Amazingly, I no longer had a suspect OS. Complete and utter BS!
