Its not trending because people are running Windows 7 and thinking "Hey lets upgrade"
These metrics are based on web use, not sales. It is most likely piracy driving Windows 7 numbers up. It is trivial to safely pirate Windows 7. The same is not true of 8.

You can bet a good chunk of kijiji refurbs are sold with Windows 7 and a loader or with licenses originally included with the pc, but unused in deployment. This is likely a global phenomena for the sub-$200 refurb market.

New PC sales have always driven Microsoft OS adoption. As we all should know by now, the desktop PC industry is in a crisis. This is why Windows 8 adoption is slow.

I'd reverse that... one of the reasons the PC industry is in crisis is because of lackluster acceptance of win8, and the absolute refusal of Microsoft to listen to it's user base.

In all honesty, win8 adoption is in the same boat as the great majority of PC hardware WRT upgrades. If we turn a blind eye to the issues around touch screen OS vrs Desktop OS we're still left with the problem that there's not much incentive to upgrade, there isn't a huge difference from win7 to win8, the same as there isn't a hell of a lot of performance difference from consumer grade hardware purchased 3 - 4 years ago.

Decided to load the new Facebook app - mistake. It works fine but a) can't re-size on my three screen array - Hydra vision does not work on this app. and b) It slowed down my Win8 startup time considerably - didn't time it but adds at least a minute + from the time I log in until it's ready to use - reduced radically by disabling this app. Ain't worth it - I'll open my browser when I want to FB.

Facebook app (among others I'd imagine.) starts up automatically when you boot.

I'm assuming it's a live tile.

Currently running 8.1 on my mITX build, and will grudgingly admit that the return of the start button is more than just window dressing. Some of the other changes they've made have also made navigating around without using the search feature a bit more intuitive. I won't be switching my main rig over to win8, but I suspect I won't hate the win 8.1 experience on the APU that's going to be hooked up to the TV quite as much as I thought I would. :)

No, they're still working on Win8.

At this point they're probably going to release another update for Win8, so by the time Win9 rolls around, Win8->Win8.1U2 (or whatever they call it) will have had about twice as much dev time as Win8.1U2->Win9.

It looks like pretty much everybody who was involved with win 8's design "vision" has been moved on and they've done everything but put the nested start menu back. Last I read suggested that the next major update will include the return of the nested start menu.

As far as the current state of windows 8(.1) goes... I'm using it on two different PCs (low powered mITX builds) and would probably order win 8.1 media if I were building a new PC for myself... anybody else would probably get win7 unless they specifically wanted 8.1. What doesn't work well is using early win8 media for a fresh install... it's a painfully slow process that should be as simple as having the first update jump immediately to installing a win8.1 "service pack".
