Default anyone build there own Android OS?

my self with so much time on my hands and
I have been contemplating buying a tablet using android but I really want to understand the Android OS and for me the best way to do this is to find some where that can instruct me on how to build the OS using its source code. again the problem is I would have to build that inside a virtual Linux os or is there a easier way to do this?
I want to do t his just to see what if any limitations of the OS there are or are not.
SO I am wondering if anyone here has done this before and if so where does one learn about how to do this?

Agreed. XDA Developers should become your new home for Android. Not only is it a good reference site for you, but it's also where most mods and skins are released. So if you want to get in to your own builds, that's the site to get it vetted and such.

Just watch out for all the jerks though. They think that because they develop ROMs for the community, they can do whatever they want. A lot of them won't take criticism or suggestions. It's a great forum filled with bad people.
