Yup.

MS has gone full retard. I would not be surprised though...if around the time Win 9 comes out...that technet will be brought back. It usually takes those asshats a year or two for the clue stick beating to 'sink in'.

I found this funny as well. I received at least 5 emails and a regular enveliope in the main asking me to renew.

Then today an email saying they are cancelling at the end of August.

Honestly, I dont use it enough to justify renewing it.

Same here. This has got me really pissed off. With my home lab, I'm gonna need these licences. As AkG said, they'll probably bring something similar back in 1-2 years. They did exactly that with the MCSE and MCSA certs.

In all honesty it'll be cheaper for me anywise.... until they started to go stupid last fall I was renewing my TechNet @ $250 / year just so that I had access to the latest OS distro on 2 or 3 household PCs, absolutely none of my keys left this house. I'd think that $250 / year in perpetuity vice $2 - $3 hundred every 3 years or so for OEM licenses would be a win-win on both ends, but I guess that doesn't fit with their current model.

Did the email say anything about grandfathered non-expiring keys?

I guess too many people abused the program. I got all 10 keys per each OS and Office product, including the different versions out there. Then I split them with friends... Still got some remaining.

Microsoft's murder most foul: TechNet is dead ? The Register

Reasonably good rant / view of the move to kill TechNet......
