I always make an image of my HD when I have installed windows + updates + apps I frequenly use. data such as music and movies backed up separately. imaging or re-imaging takes like 45-60 minutes. i suggest you do the same.

Do you use Acronis, or just Ghost the partition on a seperate drive?

I use Ghost, burn the image to disc. Compressed.

I use a free utility called driveimage xml. It doesn't have any special features but it backs up and restores image. I use it because it's free and has a module for win/bart PE

Clonezilla is another free utility. I haven't used it yet but a well respected database blogger gave it a thumbs up after using it to clone a laptop drive.
