Windows 7 HDD activity LED gadget?

The title is pretty self explanatory..... ;)

Has anybody come across a decent win7 gadget (or program) that just gives a visual indication of hdd activity? All I'm really looking for is something that would replace the hdd activity light that laptop manufacturers don't seem to want to incorporate into their kit.

I've done a few google searches, but since gadgets are no long supported by MS I'd be a lot more comfortable with recommendations from members than something I just downloaded / installed from some random website. (There was one that came up in searches that looked to be a Russian website.... didn't want to go there blindly.... ;) ).

I know this isnt exactly what you're looking for, but it may be of help. Rainmeter Forums - View topic - ForceX System Monitor v3.0.6(Feb-20-2013)

Thanks for the suggestion, but yeah, I'm really looking for something a lot smaller. If I wanted something similar to that, I could just run windows resource monitor with the window shrunk down to almost just the disk IO "light" (as per the image below), but I figured there's probably something out there designed specifically to mimic the HDD LED light.

I dunno.... maybe it's just me, but I've always used the HDD LED as a quick reference when / if a PC seems to have stopped responding to inputs.... if I see it chunking I at least know it's doing something. :)

edit:

This is the kind of thing I'm trying to avoid.... Free HDD LED - CNET Download.com Looks perfect, but it's one of those annoying little apps (from a reasonably trusted source) that attempts to install third party apps (how they make their money) without a clear direction as to how to install without the third party programs.

You can try something like Drivegleam http://www.dirtcellar.net/software/d...drivegleam.php

Looks like it may take a bit of configuring the way you want but comes as a standalone if you prefer that and has the indicator in the task manager.

This looks good as well but even more convoluted to setup haha. I haven't tried this one so it may not be too bad. DiskLED - A Flexible Hard Disk and General System Activity Indicator System Tray Applet | sepago

Here is website which talks about it, some comments as well that may be worth reading. A Simple, Free Hard Disk LED Simulator

That's a good idea. As some may know, Antec liked to hide the LED behind the door of the P180. I too like to check disk activity but found I could not with the case door closed. PITA.

Thanks, I saw a few of those things mentioned during my searches (seems to me that drivegleam has/is a dll that's been used for at least one other open source application) so your links will certainly give me a good starting point. I even came across one post/thread (unfortunately it was a discussion of an XP app that may or may not work in win7) that referenced the function of sending the signal to one of the keyboard leds... that would be uber kool!!!!! ;)

Anywise, please keep the suggestions coming if there are any more out there. As I said, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd benefit from finding something to fit the bill.

A little bit of a thread res, but I've found an open source app that seems to work well under windows 8 (haven't tried it under windows 7).

Activity Indicator | Free Security & Utilities software downloads at SourceForge.net

Works great as an icon in the notifications area of the taskbar.
