Cut off frequencies

Hey guys, just wanted to make sure i do right, so,i wanna cut off some frequencies,to test how it sounds like... all i have to do is open an equalizer and take the frequencies i don't want and set them to -60db? i mean, slide the sliders down? i just wanna remove some bass at a specific frequency.

For example,if i wanna remove everything under 60hz,i just drag the sliders at and before 60 hz and it will mute those frequencies right?

And if it's just a ratio, how can i just delete frequencies in a sound? any software? Thanks!
