I bought the DVD. Just don't like where software is going where they try to make you download everything and control how you use the software you paid for.

If you set desktop apps as default to open all your file types, and don't open any metro apps manually, Win8 works almost identically to Win7 anyway.

Correct me if I am wrong , but was not Win8 targeted more to the touch screen consumer i.e. tablets etc.. Every one I talk to hates it on their desktop pc's. personally I will not even bother with it.

For the average user that I am, I simply put my most used applications on the taskbar and minimize my time in the Start Menu in Windows 8. Seems to be working okay for for me, but not for Microsoft...

I used the above mentioned Classic shell and it works well to simulate a win 7 desktop. This is for a lady who had a win 7 laptop and needed a new one and I made it look and feel like her old one. she isn't going to be able to deal with win 8's weirdness. Heck I couldn't even deal with it. I suppose I could get used to it but I shouldn't have to. It should work the way I want it to work not the way they think I should work. Arrogant pig lickers. Same with the stupid office 2007 and 2010 ribbons. i have to download that ubitmenu program to give you the tool bars back. Why design things that require more clicks to make things happen. Windows 8 takes like 3 clicks to turn off. They have the stupid tiles. why not make one turn it off? You wonder if they really do any product testing on anyone older than 16?

Ok in a twisted turn of events, I decided to buy Windows 8 Pro for 70$ (Student discount ftw!) it's even cheaper than Windows 7 on sale lol. Now what cause me to buy it? My media server PC was running Ubuntu before however, the latest version broke so many applications like... Remote Desktop seriously... that I decided to go back to Windows. I have a Windows Home Server 2013 DVD lying around in my house but the problem is A. It's an Intel Desktop Board (meaning no drivers) and B. Some applications I want to use are not supported on Windows Server... go figure... So ya Windows 8 was the only solution. I'll see if I can live with it or not.

If I want to turn off my computer I hit the power button.

Microsoft does some of the most extensive testing of any software company.

These days, that seems to default to sleep mode as opposed to an actual power off, and while they might get a lot of eyes on their software during beta and consumer preview phases, they're not very good at listening to their customers and going back to the drawing board if required.

Windows 8 is awesome once you get Classic Shell and disable all that metro crap. Win 7 feels so bland and featureless after you get use to Windows 8.

Is that actually the default in Win8? I don't have any Win8 systems currently, but the default in Server2012 is to shutdown when the power button is pushed.

Well, IMO, most of the complaints about Win8 are baseless and mostly amount to "I don't like change", so it's not that MS isn't good at listening, it's that they're good at ignoring complaints that don't matter.

They did make some late changes based on the previews, the early previews didn't have sticky corners, making all the corner actions basically impossible on multi-monitor setups - they're now improved to the point where they're better than Win7.
