DX10 for Windows XP?

This article from GameInformer claims that some games from Valve will support dx10 on XP.

"For those who recently upgraded their PC video cards to support DX10, you’ll be happy to know that both Episode Two and Team Fortress 2 will support the advanced technology of these cards, even if the PC is running Windows XP. On the low-end front, Valve still plans on supporting PCs that can only run DX8 applications. Valve’s attempting to also support DX7, but couldn’t confirm if it’d go back that far with technology."

That's great news!

I loved playing the original TF. I wonder if they have conc maps..?

They won't be running DX10 in Windows Vista, they are just taking advantage of the DX10 capabilities of the cards.

There are groups out there trying to port DX10 to XP but they say it will be some time before we see that happen.

Personally, I think that Valve has it right. They will support nearly ALL generations of cards instead of limiting their customer base by designing a game around DX10.

That is why there is no need at all to jump to DX-10 and Vista. Game makers will make things work for older hardware almost for certain. Why miss the opportunity to make money off people that cannot afford to upgrade yet want to play new games? I for one have no plans on Vista or a DX-10 card for a long long time. Besides, until these new DX-10 games get released and people are actually playing them, there is no proof that DX-10 is the be all end all. I am sure it is better and I don't deny it is the future at this point, but I also don't think it is that much better to justify dealing with Vista before SP2.
