Hmm got back to windows may have been a bios setting.

Yep a bios setting on the data was holding me back had to be set to ide

So after a long night of installing updates, and then switching the sata mode from IDE to AHCI, this new rig of mine is running great. Just played some Mechwarrior online. :) fun, now I just need a decent monitor and a new keyboard and mouse.

I'm glad you're having fun with it, but that's WAY outside the norm for a Windows 7 install unless you've already identified your issue to definitely be software or a dumb BIOS setting. As mentioned you could have faulty or improperly mounted CPU, RAM, or disk.
At the very least I'd see if that computer can pass Memtest86+ and a few hours (>3) so of LinX or Prime95. I'd also let Windows scan any drives you BSOD'd on for errors.
