I personally prefer windows 7. I had the opportunity to work on a computer with windows 8 and I can say it is terrible.

I'm sure this would be a great addition to my granddaughters morning cartoon regiment. It does however capture the mindset of 8. Simple.

So how do people feel about it now? Still worth it to try out? Has it changed much since the consumer preview back in feburary?

if you didn't like it then, you won't like it now; if you liked it then, you'll like it more now.

Well yes '8 loads fast, less driver searching but hey who needs the touch screen type look on desktops unless so equipped?

Personally I just use '7 so far I have played 8 with it but don't like a lot of the way its laid out.

Of course as humans we usually resist change to a degree but is this change to '8 for the better or change for changes sake?

Driver support seems to be pretty decent out of the box. The only drivers I needed for a fresh install on my iconia W500 tab were the ones related to the Gmeter (auto changing of the viewing profile), everything else was picked up by the OS.

That's IMO pretty damn impressive, and makes for a pretty decent touch screen tablet experience.

OTOH, the annoyances of non-tablet use are still there and if anything have gotten worse since they removed the option to use the reg hack for the start key.

Strangely enough I had no problems accessing a networked folder outside of the homegroup, although it did require a username / password.

I was always in the habit of pinning often used programs to the Windows XP/7 taskbar or the start menu favourites. I was just getting used to using the start menu search bar to find less used (or even hidden) applications and utilities. So, I wasn't using the start menu that often. I found myself being irritated mousing through several nested panes (XP) or scrolling (Win7) through the program files. The Metro UI is basically a really big taskbar. In fact, better since I can group my apps and customize the layout to suit my habits. I don't miss desktop icons. And I only have to start typing to immediately find other applications.

It does boot extremely fast. Driver support is very good. The new task manager and performance tools are fantastic. I dropped installed a wireless card, and the Win8 drivers loaded seamlessly in the background. Task manager showed me real-time wireless network speeds so I could easily diagnose connection problems.
